Which is the rarest?

Nama Article - 1st August 2007

Excerpts from the discourse of Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji

Earning Bhakti is rare ('durlabam')

Attaining 'nishkãmya bhakti' (devotion without any intention behind it) is rarer.

Earning this 'nishkãmya bhakti' for Krishna is even rarer,

and earning it in the path of Chanting the Divine Name (Namakirtan) is the rarest!

Chant the Mahamantra Nama kirtan :

Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – 31st July 2007

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – 31 st July 2007

I felt very inferior when looked at the big, broad world and realized that there so many things that I did not know. But when I realized that knowledge of the Self is the only thing that mattered, not anything else of the mundane world, I felt most superior

-- Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji

Even if you perform the smallest dharma I will protect you from the worst fear

Nama Article - 31st July 2007

Devotee:

"The Bhagavat Gita says that Jnana (True Knowledge) is the highest state. As such how can one attain the highest state by merely chanting the Lord's Divine Name?"

Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji:

"It is verily in this Bhagavat Gita that the Lord has said,

'swalpam api asya dharmasya traayate mahato bhayaat!'—

even if you perform the smallest dharma I will protect you from the worst fear.

Smallest dharma is verily Chanting the Divine Name (Namakirtan) and ignorance ['ajnaana'] the worst fear. Annihilation of ajnaana (ignorance) is verily Jnaana (True Knowledge)."

Chant the Mahamantra Nama kirtan :

Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare

Which path do you follow?...................What is the greatness of Bhakthi?

Nama Article - 30th July 2007

Devotee

Swamiji, though you preach that constant chanting of Lord's name is the only way for liberation at modern times, you also give lectures about other paths like Athma Vichara, Raja yoga and Meditation. Which path do you follow?

Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji

Though I preach about different paths, the path I follow is that of Bhakti Marga i.e chanting of Lord's name.

Devotee

Since you stress a lot on the path of devotion (Bhakthi).... What is the greatness of Bhakthi?

Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji

If a person says that he is unable to do Yogam (by pranayamam etc.) or meditation , or self enquiry or Vedic Karma, there is some rationale in what he says. But nobody can say that he is unable to do Bhakthi. He can realize God easily, just by chanting one name of God incessantly.

This, is the greatness of Bhakthi.

Chant the Mahamantra Nama kirtan :

Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – 29TH JULY 2007

Great merits accumulated over countless births could give one darshan of God Almighty. But it would require greater merit to get a glimpse of one who has had darshan of God Almighty.

Why we need a Guru?

It is only through a Guru that we learn even a matter ('vidhya') that can be perceived with our physical eyes. From making a mud pot to matters relating to Science we need a Teacher. If, even to learn worldly matters such as these, we need a Guru no one can learn a matter that is beyond the realm of this world ('amãnushya', 'alaukeeka', 'adhyãrtmika') on his own. One has to definitely approach a Master and only through Him can he gain such spiritual knowledge.

Sri Sri Muralidharaswamiji

What is Guru Bhakthi?

Bhakti is all about showing gratitude. A Guru shows us how to show our gratitude to the Lord. Showing gratitude to the Guru for showing us how to show gratitude to the Lord is Guru Bhakti.

Sri Sri Muralidharaswamiji

How to show our gratitude to our Guru?

Devotee:

I wish to do some serive to you. What can I do?

Sri Sri Muralidharaswamiji:

Chanting the Mahamantra

You are asking us to do chanting during study time. How do you justify this?

Nama Article - 28th July 2007

Excerpts from a discourse by our Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji

The classmates of Prahlada (Devotee whose story comes in Srimad Bhagavatham) question him, "Prahlada! You are asking us to utter, 'Narayana! Narayana!' You are a prince. You live in a palace. Your father has earned lots of wealth for you. Even if you do chanting you will get food. You can live comfortably. Are we not poor people? We can earn only if we work. Should we not find some good employment? We can find employment only if we are well educated. You are asking us to do chanting during study time. How do you justify this?"

What does Prahlada reply?

"Before sending us down to the earth, Lord decides the parents through whom we should be born, the place of our residence, the time of our death - all these are predestined - wherefrom we would receive our food this morning has also been written by Him. Every grain that is eaten has the name (of the one who would consume it) on it! Since Lord sends each one down to the earth only after sending down whatever is needed by each, all these will come by even without your effort. Do chant the Divine Name and Lord will take care."

Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every Word that proceeds out of the mouth of God

Nama Article 27th July 2007
Power of Divine Name
After Lord Jesus had fasted forty days and forty nights, the tempter came and tempted Him, "If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread."
But He answered and said, "It is written, 'Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every Word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.'"

Chant the Mahamantra Nama kirtan :

Excerpts from a discourse by our Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji

Nanadhanar (the devout bhakta of Lord Siva) spread the path of Nama kirtan across all sects of the people. Ever since people joined Nanda in singing Nãma Sankirtan none went to attend to their work on the fields on time. So those affected by this tried to bring 'sense' into Nanda through a local leader of their hutments.

All of them joined together and approached Nanda. "Nanda! You are forever singing the Nãma. Will singing the Nãma earn food?" ('Nãmam pãdi kondirundãl soru kidaikuma?')

What does Nandhanar reply?

"Even the dog eats food. But can it chant 'Bhagavan Nãma' - the Name of the Lord? ('Nãyum kooda soru thinnum Nãmam pãdumo?')

Lord has blessed this human birth with the gift of speech only to utter His Name.

Lord has given us the ability to speak only for Chanting his names"

Chant the Mahamantra Nama kirtan :

From that day onwards, realization dawned on me that it is not mine.

Is there any need to count the numbers while chanting the Maha Mantra?

Nama Article - 24th July 2007

Source: http://www.namadwaar.org/answers/questions6.html#countmantra

Devotee:

Is there any need to count the numbers while chanting the Maha Mantra?

Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji:

When a child calls out his mother's name with love, he would not count the number of times he called out. Would he? When Nama Kirtan is done with true love and devotion, the count doesn't matter.

Though it is a fact that you are liberated even if you chant the Maha Mantra once, chant continuously if you desire a sorrow-free journey through life and if you wish to see God face-to-face within this lifetime.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – 21 st July 2007

It is one thing to perform spiritual sadhana as a means to attain God. It is an entirely different thing to develop love for God first and then perform spiritual sadhana as a means to attain Him.

The Sun's rays are spread equally ..........passed through a lens thus directing them through a single point they have the power to burn up

Nama Article - 21st July 2007

The Chanting of the Divine Name has the power to change our ways to the extent that no impure thought arises in us and thus purifies us thoroughly.

Though the Sun's rays are spread equally all over, yet when they are passed through a lens thus directing them through a single point they have the power to burn up.

Likewise, by chanting a particular Name of the Lord repeatedly single-pointedness of the mind is achieved.

With His name's thunder, snap the fetters of sin!

Nama Article 20th July 2007

Narendra (Swami Vivekananda) sang:

With beaming face chant the sweet name of God

Till in your heart the nectar overflows.

Drink of it ceaselessly and share it with all!

If ever your heart runs dry, parched by the flames

Of worldly desire, chant the sweet name of God,

And heavenly love will moisten your arid soul.

Be sure, O mind, you never forget to chant

His holy name: when danger stares in your face,

Call on Him, your Father Compassionate;

With His name's thunder, snap the fetters of sin!

Come, let us fulfil our hearts' desires

By drinking deep of Everlasting Joy,

Made one with Him in Love's pure ecstasy.

Now Narendra and the devotees began to sing kirtan, accompanied by the drum and cymbals. They moved round and round the Master, Sri Ramakrishna, as they sang.

When the music was over, Sri Ramakrishna held Narendra in his arms a long time and said, "You have made us so happy today!"

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – 19th July 2007

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – 19th July 2007

Just as  everyone consumes food to satisfy hunger, all forms of worship   are to attain God.

Food habits of different persons vary according to the type of food, the time of intake and manner of intake. But intake of water is not just common to all but indispensable too.

Likewise, worship may vary in methodology and time of performance.

But, Mahamantra is common for all—more so, as it is specifically prescribed for the present age.

-- Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji

By Chanting one gets both 'Shãnti' (peace) and 'Shakti' (power)

Nama Article - 19th July 2007

Devotee

Does one attain peace in dhyãna? Or does it increase the mental strength?

Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji

'Shakti' (power) is born out of 'Shãnti' (peace). Our mental strength is wasted due to our skeptical nature, mental contradictions, lustful thoughts and several other mental problems.

When our mind catches hold of a God or a Nãma (Name of the Lord), the mental strength is protected without being wasted.

Therefore, through dhyãna not only 'shãnti' but also great 'shakti' is born.

Steadiness is what is required.......and wait for its Grace

Nama article - 18th July 2007

Source: Talks with Bhagawan Ramana Maharshi

Talk 103.

Bhagawan Ramana Maharishi :

Even if instructed by others to do japa or dhyana, they do it for some time, but are always looking to some results, e.g., visions, dreams, or thaumaturgic powers.

If they do not find them they say they are not progressing or the tapas is not effective.

Visions, etc., are no signs of progress. Mere performance of tapas is its progress also. Steadiness is what is required. Moreover they must entrust themselves to their mantra or their God and wait for its Grace. They don't do so.

Japa even once uttered has its own good effect, whether the individual is aware or not.
