Swami Abhedananda was struck with wonder at the power of the Mahamantra. He at once took hold of the Mahamantra. He wandered all over the country to spread the same

Excerpts from a discourse by our Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji

Contemporary Mahans do get together. Thus, Swami Abhedananda went to Bhagavan Ramana Maharishi. He found devotees seated quietly, doing Atma vichara. He also sat amidst them. Bhagavan Ramana Maharishi tapped on his shoulder and said to him, "Do not sit here. Go and do Mahamantra kirtan. You have come for that only."

Until then Swami Abhedananda had not known the Mahamantra. He wondered what to do. He went to the podigai hill in Kuttralam. He went and sat inside a cave there. He was still not convinced about what Bhagavan Ramana had told him. He sat with his eyes closed. At this time there lived a wealthy family in a nearby village. The only child in the family had been struck with some disease. Doctors could not cure the child and had given up the case. The child had been brought back to the village home. The whole family was drowned in deep sorrow.

Village women who used to go to the forest to collect woods for the fuel informed the family about the presence of a Swamiji in the forest and suggested that they seek his counsel in the matter. At once, the whole family rushed to Swami Abhedananda.

Swami Abhedananda had only recently walked out of his home. He sat in the small cave on the hill. He thought, 'Bhagavan Ramana has advised me about the Mahamantra. These people think that I have some supernatural power,' and playfully said to them, "Do incessant chanting of 'Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare! Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare!' all through the night. Your child will be saved."

Swami Abhedananda had advised them playfully but the family returned home and chanted the Mahamantra all through the night with deep reverence and faith. In the morning the child was back to normal state! The elated family went to Swami Abhedananda with garland, fruits and other offerings and honored him in gratitude. The Swamiji was struck with wonder at the power of the Mahamantra. He at once took hold of the Mahamantra. He wandered all over the country. He has done kirtan of the Mahamantra in all the Temples of Tamizh Nadu. He has performed the kirtan day and night. Wherever he went people came in thousands. There was only the chanting of the Mahamantra and nothing else – no discourse, no other kirtan. It was only singing the Mahamantra. He would begin the chanting in a booming voice and it would be so to the end, notwithstanding the long hours of chanting. All people attracted by his Atma shakti and santi would do kirtan all through the day and night.

What is real happiness?

Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji:

From a small worm to the largest of creatures, every being is in quest of happiness. Have we attained it? Yes, however they are fleeting in nature.

Then what is true happiness? True happiness lies within you.

We need not go and search in the world to find true happiness. It lies in realizing the Self, which is your actual state of being. By merely removing ignorance this can be realized.

The easiest way towards this goal is by chanting the Mahamantra.

Namakirtan (Chanting the Divine Name) performed with worldly benefits in mind also leads us to salvation

Nama Article 19th April 2009

"A fire-lantern not only illuminates but also provides us heat, though unintended. A gas stove provides us light in addition to the heat that we intended to get out of it.

Likewise, Namakirtan (Chanting the Divine Name) performed with worldly benefits in mind also leads us to salvation and Namakirtan performed with the intention of earning Salvation also brings in worldly comforts."

With the conscious effort of Japa or Dhyana, as we call it, we prevent our mind from thinking of other things, then what remains is our real nature, which is Japa.

Nama Article 18th April 2009

Japa (Repetition of God's name)

By Sri Ramana Maharshi

Edited by David Godman

When the Japa becomes continuous, all other thoughts cease and one is in one's real nature, which is Japa or Dhyana (meditation or contemplation). We turn our mind outwards on things of the world and are therefore not aware of our real nature being always Japa. With the conscious effort of Japa or Dhyana, as we call it, we prevent our mind from thinking of other things, then what remains is our real nature, which is Japa.

Wish you all Happy Rama Navami ! What's the shortest mantra of the Almighty? - "Rama"

Someone whom we consider Guru preaches that there is no Avatar called Rama or Krishna, and that it is mere illusion. He goes on to say that those who worship these forms also are in an illusionary world. I feel hurt hearing the same as I chant the Rama Nama regularly.

Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji:

Why do you bother? When he says that everything is an illusion, he is an illusion too. So you don't need to worry about such illusions. Continue to chant the Rama Nama.

When chanting the Nama, it is incorrect to observe the mind. Concentrate on the Name, and the Named who is none other than Krishna.

I feel restless, get negative thoughts and end up with frustration on myself. I lose concentration in my studies and only after a long time do I regain it back. At times I feel that I don't chant Nama sufficiently. I want to chant the Mahamantra more and more with more love towards Krishna.

Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji:

When chanting the Nama, it is incorrect to observe the mind. Concentrate on the Name, and the Named who is none other than Krishna.

Once a patient had a serious illness and he approached the doctor. After examining the patient thoroughly, the doctor prescribed a set of medicines. Immediately the patient said, 'I am averse to taking these medicines. Please give me some medicines that will make me amenable to take these pills!"

So, chant the Divine Name. That is the solution to everything. Wake up from slumber, come out of your laziness, realize the truth and chant the Nama. That will show you the way.
