Excerpts from a discourse by our Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji

When we encounter misery, instead of wailing, if we cry out the name of the Lord, irrespective of the condition and situation, He comes down to help us.

Yogi used to live under a peepul tree in Tiruvannamalai.  One night he was sleeping under the tree with other devotees.  At about midnight, suddenly Yogi arose saying, 'this beggar has an important job' and started walking as others followed him.  A mile or two away, there was a large farm land, and in the center was a huge well that irrigated the land. The well did not have walls, and a horse had fallen into it.

We need to save the horse, said Yogi.  Looking at the sheer size of the fallen horse, the people around said, 'Let us call the fire station'.

Yogi replied, 'If you can save the horse, go ahead.  Otherwise, leave it to this beggar.'

Puranas say that the elephant Gajendran who was in pain, cried out to the Lord and the Lord arrived from Vaikunta to save it.

Now, it was this horse, and no one knew how it cried out, and Yogi was there to save it!

Yogi went around the well twice and then, swaying his hand-fan, chanted, 'Om Sri Ram! Jai Ram! Jai Jai Ram!' and then, just as we watch it in a movie, the horse gently jumped out and ran away!

This is not a  built-up story! Even today, there are people who have witnessed this event.

People asked Yogi, 'Bhagavan! you are capable of doing such miracles!'

Yogi replied, 'No No! This beggar is not capable of doing any miracles. Only Ram Naam is doing miracles!'

In our life we enjoy or suffer depending on our 'paapa' and 'punya'.  The imprints of our past deeds ('prarabda') follow us.

No one's life is filled with just happiness or just sorrow.  Life is a mix of both happiness and sorrow.

In such a life, when we encounter misery, instead of wailing, if we cry out the name of the Lord, irrespective of the condition and situation, He comes down to help us.

The greatest Maya according to me is that everyone knows in their heart of hearts that there is no other go except chanting the Mahamantra, but they are not willing to accept it and follow it openly.

Maya

I always wonder about two classes of people:

One, the person who cremates corpses in the graveyard standing witness to the burning bodies day in and day out

and another,  the surgeon who tears open the body during surgery to find that it contains nothing but flesh and bones.

In spite of their daily experience It is stunning to see how the Maya masks the Truth from them who continue their life as ever before!

The noblest work!

People are proud of so many things in life.  If someone were to ask us about our educational qualification, we mention only the highest degree that we have earned, don't we?

Performance of Namakirtan is the noblest of all work.

So, if anyone desires to know what you are, instead of telling them that you are an advocate or a doctor or a software engineer, proudly tell them that you perform Mahamantra Kirtan!

The oral repetition of the Name leads one to mental repetition which finally resolves itself into the eternal vibration. The mind or the mouth cannot act without the Self.

THE GREATNESS OF JAPA BY RAMANA MAHARISHI

A devotee asked, "How does the repetition of the name of God help Realisation?"

Sri Ramana Maharishi replied, "The original name is always going on spontaneously without any effort on the part of the individual. That name is aham – 'I'. But when it becomes manifest it manifests as ahamkara – the ego.

The oral repetition of the Name leads one to mental repetition which finally resolves itself into the eternal vibration. The mind or the mouth cannot act without the Self."

I will not forsake the Name of the Lord.....if I did, I would be going against my Guru.......The Supreme Lord God, the Divinity of the divine...........assumed the form of the man-lion.........no one can know the Lord's limits

Sant Kabir

Prahlaad was sent to school

He took many of his friends along with him

He asked his teacher, "Why do you teach me about worldly affairs?

Write the Name of the Dear Lord on my tablet

O Baba, I will not forsake the Name of the Lord.

I will not bother with any other lessons

Sanda and Marka went to the king to complain

He sent for Prahlaad to come at once

He said to him, "Stop uttering the Lord's Name

I shall release you at once, if you obey my words

Prahlaad answered, "Why do you annoy me, over and over again?

God created the water, land, hills and mountains.

I shall not forsake the One Lord Rama; if I did, I would be going against my Guru.

You might as well throw me into the fire and kill me

The king became angry and drew his sword

Show me your protector now!

So God emerged out of the pillar, and assumed a mighty form

He killed Harnaakhash, tearing him apart with his nails

The Supreme Lord God, the Divinity of the divine,

For the sake of His devotee, assumed the form of the man-lion.

Says Kabeer, no one can know the Lord's limits

He saves His devotees like Prahlaad over and over again

For inner communion, there is nothing as helpful as the Divine Name. The Name is a pill of bliss.

Nama Article 18th September 2009

Swami Papa Ramdas:

Sadhana is effort made towards Godrealization.

It is possible for the average man i.e. the man in the world also. It has two aspects: (1) inner communion (2) outward vision.

For inner communion, there is nothing as helpful as the Divine Name. The Name is a pill of bliss. It is a dose of nectar. It links the mind with the Supreme Being in no time. Only those minds which are deeply attached to worldly objects cannot enjoy its sweetness.

When you have fever, sugar does not taste sweet. Similarly when one is suffering from the worldly disease one cannot enjoy its sweetness. Repetition of the Name is so simple and easy.

There is no need for any ceremonial, no external aid, no paraphernalia, no rules. The Name is self-sufficient.

THE GREATNESS OF JAPA BY RAMANA MAHARISHI

A devotee asked, "Swami, what is the easiest way to attain moksha?"

Bhagavan said with a smile, "As and when the mind goes astray, it should be turned inward and made to steady itself in the thought of the Self. That is the only way."

Another devotee said, "To do so, the repeating of the name of Rama is good, is it not?"

"Certainly, it is good," said Bhagavan. "What could be better? The greatness of the japa of the name of Rama is extraordinary. In the story of Namadeva he is reported to have told one devotee, 'If you want to know the greatness of the name of Rama you must first know what your own name is, what your real nature (swarupa) is, who you are and how you were born. Unless you know your own origin, you will not know your name!' This idea is found in the Abhangas of Namadeva written in Marathi language and in the Malayalam Adhyatma Ramayana."
