No amount of intellect or genius can help as does Guru’s Grace. Guru’s Grace can bestow knowledge on a person in no time.

Nama Article 24th April  2015

Wish you all happy Sankara Jayanthi and Ramanuja Jayanthi

Excerpts from a discourse by our Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji

In Sringeri Sankara was met and served by a deeply devoted disciple Giri who later became Totakachãrya, showing to the world what devotion to the Guru can do. Though dull headed, Giri, loved his Guru Sankara very deeply. He served Sankara with deep love. One day Giri was late in returning from washing his Guru's clothes. Though it was time for the class to begin and all the students had arrived Sankara waited for this lovable disciple of his. When the disciples wondered and questioned about the delay in beginning the class, Sankara said, "Giri has not yet come!" The whole class burst out laughing. The compassionate heart of the Guru melted with deep warmth as the others laughed at his lovable disciple and the Grace sprung forth from him and engulfed Giri who was still on the banks of the river. The class of scholars was wonderstruck when in a few minutes time 'the dull head' came into the hall clapping and singing the praises of his Guru in eight stanzas in Totaka metre. No amount of intellect or genius can help as does Guru's Grace. Guru's Grace can bestow knowledge on a person in no time. Since that day Giri came to be known as Totakacharaya as the hymn was composed in Totaka metre.

Sri Koorathazhwar was a great disciple of Sri Ramanujacharya. He was a very learned person and a scholar, and although senior to Sri Ramanuja in age, was an epitome of Acharya bhakti and humility. One day, when he and many other disciples were with Sri Ramanuja, a deaf and dumb man came to seek the Acharya's blessings. Sri Ramanuja was intensely moved on seeing the plight of that man who could neither say nor hear the Divine Name of the Lord. Tears filled the eyes of Sri Ramanuja as his compassion poured on a soul who could not attain Vaikunta in that birth simply because of his circumstances. Then Sri Ramanuja asked all his disciples to leave the room immediately and close the door behind them, so that he could be alone with the deaf and dumb man. All the disciples, including Koorathazhwar, left the room. However Koorathazhwar was curious to see what his acharya was going to do. So he peeped in through a window. He saw his acharya place his feet on the head of the deaf and dumb man and bless him, saying that now he would attain Vaikunta. When Koorathazhwar saw this, he broke down and began to cry, lamenting his own fate. Regretting all his learning, scholarship and intellectuality, he cried wishing he had been born deaf, dumb and a simpleton so that he would have had the great fortune of having his Acharya's feet placed on his head, thus attaining life's highest goal so simply and easily!

TO THE UTTER SURPRISE OF EVERYONE, THE BOY WHO HAD NOT SPOKEN A WORD EVER SINCE HE WAS BORN, OPENED HIS MOUTH AND REPEATED AFTER SRI SWAMIJI, 'R A M A' !

Immediately that dumb boy gained divine knowledge and started dancing, singing the Divine Names, `Rama' and `Krishna'

His mother, corrected him saying that, uttering Rama Nama once would do!

The dassi came to have a darshan of Bodhendral and after prostrating to him she left this world through Kabala moksham in front of her guru like how a yogi leave this world

Nama Article 23rd April  2015

Swami Papa Ramdas

"The key to absolute bliss and peace is the Divine Name. Use this key and earn this eternal blessing. Repeat — on and on — the sweet and glorious name of the Lord. Be ever filled with its music and you will have finally solved all the problems of your life."

Direct your vision inward and realise the glory of the Atman. The key that unlocks the door to this spiritual kingdom within you is Ram-nam.

Great saints have all shown us that the Lord will bestow us with these qualities if one humbly submits to Him in prayer. Hence the key to unlocking all of God's treasures lies in the single quality: Humility.

Maha Periyava of Kaanchi Kaamakoti Peetam advises us that learning the chanting of prayers even without knowing the meaning is a worthwhile act, and can be compared to finding a box of treasure without the key

Ramdas has told you practically everything he had to say. He has emphasised again and again the importance of taking the holy Name of God. He can tell you that it is a key that opens the gate to the realm of perfect happiness, peace and freedom.

Krishna’s name, chanted even once, either with faith or contempt, it delivers the chanter

Nama Article 22nd April  2015

Skanda Purana

Krishna's name is the sweetest of sweet things, the most auspicious of auspicious things, the essence of the fruit of all Vedic literature and is the ultimate bliss. O best of the Bhrigus, chanted even once, either with faith or contempt, it delivers the chanter

Those who chant the Mahamantra even once in this Kali Yuga are assured of 'Moksha' (liberation)

This Bhagavatha Dharma is founded and established by Lord Sri Krishna which protects the entire world.

I have uttered the name of God; I have repeated the name of Rama or Hari. How can I be a sinner?' One must have faith in the glory of God's name

The Master had the faith of a child. He immediately pointed out, 'Then why is there dirt on my body?' Krishnakishore explained, 'The inner impurities go away and not the external dirt.'

The glory of the Divine Names cannot be understood by logic, reasoning or argument

If you utter the Divine Name of the Lord, it will eliminate all your sins without leaving any residue.

Any person who Chants the Name of Krishna even only once, no matter, whether said devoutly or disdainfully, would cross the ocean of life.

Sri Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswati Swamigal extols the greatness of Chanting the Divine Name of Lord Shiva by quoting the below mentioned Sloka in Srimad Bhagavatha

Japa even once uttered has its own good effect, whether the individual is aware or not.

Lord Rama says, "I vouch safe security against all living beings to one who comes to me only once and seeks protection (from me), saying " Rama, I am yours", such is my vow"

As the rising sun immediately dissipates all the world's darkness, so the holy name of the Lord, if chanted once, can dissipate all the reactions of a living being's sinful life

Nama Article 21st April  2015

Excerpts from a discourse by our Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji on Akshaya tritiyai - April 26, 2001

"Human birth is meant only for the purpose of attainment of Bhagavãn.

Let's say you are on a hijacked aircraft. What are your feelings then? Does anything other than your life matter to you then? Is anything - your wealth, your learning, family and friends of any help to you then? A fervent prayer is on your lips and in your heart. The intensity of your prayer is at its deepest, for, you are in the most precarious situation. Well! Your life is similar to this. Even as we look around we find the world filled with various kinds of sorrows - diseases both physical and mental, financial problems, strained human relationships even amongst immediate family members, poverty, corruption, disloyalty, dishonesty. Countries wage war with each other. There is distrust between nations. Thus this material world is not of much worth. Anyone of the above can hit you any moment Yearn for freedom from this shackle of life just as you would yearn for safety/freedom while caught in a hijacked aircraft. The intensity of your prayer should be that of a person on hijacked aircraft who has no other thought but the one thought of getting out of that particular situation.

Chant Bhagavan Nãma. Make best use of the Satsang. Listen and assimilate the words of the Guru. Only a Sadguru can lead you to light. A man may perform rigorous spiritual practices but if it is done without the help of a Sadguru it will all be a wasteful exercise. The reason for this is it is only a Sadguru who can destroy your 'ahankara' (the Ego).

That Guru is greater than even Bhagavãn is shown in Prahlada's charitra. Lord Nrisimha takes Prahlada on to His lap and pets him. Narada, Prahlada's Guru appears at the scene. Immediately Prahlada leaves the Lord's lap and rushes to his Guru! The Lord pulls the child back to His lap but Prahlada again rushes to his Guru! Prahlada desires the proximity of his Guru and not the lap of Bhagavãn! "

Worshiping the Lord is the common duty for all. He who constantly worships me by Chanting the Divine Names attains firm devotion to Me

Nama Article 12th April  2015

Srimad Bhagavatham 11:18:44

सर्वेषां मद्-उपासनम्

Though, different duties are prescribed for different people, Worshiping the Lord is the common duty for all

Srimad Bhagavatham 11:18:44

इति मां यः स्व-धर्मेण भजेन् नित्यम् अनय-भाक्

सर्व-भूतेषु मद्-भावो मद्-भक्तिं विन्दते दृढाम्

He who constantly worships me by Chanting the Divine Names through the performance of prescribed duties, seeking no other reward, begins to look upon all created beings as Myself and attains firm devotion to Me.

Please check these: Excerpts from a discourse by our Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji

The devotee is the best of virtuous, who having completely neglected all his duties, though prescribed by me, while knowing full the virtues (resulting from the performance of duty) and sins (incurred by neglecting them) worships me alone by the Chanting the Divine Names.

The one unchangeable thing is Krishna; others are changeable and hence unreliable. Therefore the duty of all is to make Krishna their own.

He too is the best of all virtuous men, who having completely neglected all duties and worships Me alone by Chanting the Divine Names.

भजते शनकैस् तस्य मनो प्रसीदति - by Chanting my Divine Names one gradually gets purified

The spirit of Devotion cultivated by the recitation of His Name is the best form of virtue and this alone has been declared to be the paramount duty that should be practiced in this world.

For one who chants the name of God, Neither yoga nor the ritual of yajna is needed; The injunctions of duty do not pertain to him; He transcends all illusion.

The highest perfection of human life is to remember the God's Name at the end of life.

Năma Sankirtan has been common for all the Yugas. It only means that it is a 'vishesha dharma' (especially meant for/tailor made) for Kali Yuga.

Do your duty, but do not forget God. If you try to break a jackfruit, your hands will be smeared with its sticky juice. But that won't happen if, beforehand, you rub them with oil.

Our duty is only to take the Nama to people. We will not bother about the results. We are not making anyone chant. It is Lord Krishna who does that.

Bhagavatha Ambareesha attained supreme devotion to Lord Vasudeva and His pious devotees by virtue of which all this untold wealth was regarded by him as clod of earth.

He fixed his mind exclusively on the lotus feet of Lord Vishnu and employed his words by Chanting His Divine Names and recounting the virtues of Lord Vaikunta, his hands in sweeping the temple of Sri Hari and so on, his auditory sense in hearing the excellent stories of the immortal Lord.

Remembering the Hare Rama Maha mantra always is Punya (Virtue), Forgetting Hare Rama Maha Mantra is sin

All rituals are corollaries of the these two basic rules – "Always remember Sri Krishna. Never forget him

God's name on one's lips is itself salvation, disregard (of the name) know to be perdition.

Remembering Rama is the greatest gain and forgetting Him is the biggest loss"

Sri Hari, the bestower of salvation, gives beauty, health, wordly possessions and appropriate enjoyments to those who constantly medidiate on Him.

Those who Chant the Divine Names of Hari, Udupi Krishna blesses them with adequate food.

If you want God alone, why do you accept the existence of anything else ?

If someone forgets the Beloved Lord, even for an instant, what sort of devotion is that?

As your heart beats as you sleep, dream or being awake let your tongue always Chant the Divine Names of Hari.

If you become that anxious on forgetting to chant the Divine Name even for a second, then you are blessed.

One should constantly repeat the names of God irrespective of any activity that he might be involved in

We should Chant and remember the Divine Name every breath we intake and we need not try to do anything else.

kalakshebo na kartavyah, kshenamaayuh kshane kshane, yamasya karuna naasti, kartavyam hari kirtanam.

What man who is conscious of good offices done by you to Your devotees can possibly turn his back on you, the Ruler and the Beloved, the very Self of the entire creation, who bestow all desire boons upon those that have sought shelter with You by Chanting the Divine Names?

Mediate on the Lotus feet of the Master who has blessed that Chanting the Divine Names of Hari "Kanna Kanna" would alone bestow salvation and is the only wealth.

The Magic of the Guru's Love

You may be the worst sinner, highly undisciplined; you may have committed all kinds of atrocities; yet, if a mahatma declares, "Oh, he is my child", that will suffice for you

Guru's boundless grace is immeasurable, limitless and infinite.

If we surrender ourselves absolutely without any reservation to the Guru, He will save us from all sorrow and show us the way to salvation

When a disciple leads his life with the clear understanding that it is the Guru who is running his life - adverse or otherwise, completely emptying the mind of personal likes and dislikes, seeing everything as Guru's leela, attains realization

The best offering that a disciple can give to the Guru is realizing that nothing else can equal his grace.

When can one earn Guru krupa? When God decides to bless a person, he receives Guru's grace. One has to be blessed with Bhakti; and that is blessed only by God/Guru.

To collect people living around one's home and help them chant the Lord's Name is verily service to the Guru. Or to follow the special instruction given to him/her by the Guru is verily 'service' to the Guru.

Let us cling to His glorious Name with all love and faith, and let Him do what He pleases with us.

Nama Article 8th April  2015

Swami Papa Ramdas

Let us cling to His glorious Name with all love and faith, and let Him do what He pleases with us. Ours is to realise our immortality

Please check these: Excerpts from a discourse by our Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji

When one is afflicted with sorrow, if he persists in prayers and not question the Lord as to why He is putting him into grief, when the difficult times pass, the Lord is pleased and rewards him with a special gift of His grace.

You should not only accept from the bottom of your heart the situation that the Lord keeps you in but also be grateful to Him for that because it is verily the Lord's blessing!

When there is true love, even adversities appear to be blessings

To forget God's Name is adversity; ever to think of His Name is prosperity.

At that stage you realise you do dhyana without any effort on your part, that dhyana is your real nature. Till then, effort is necessary

The common question that arises in everyone is 'What is essential to attain God – Grace or effort?'

In the other paths, you take some effort and then wait for God's grace. In Bhakti, you depend only on the grace of God and nothing else. That makes Bhakti an easier way to attain the end-state

To remain in the Holy Feet of the Guru as a 'nobody' (zero); to remain like a doll in his hand. This is the only effort that can be taken by us

Likewise, God takes hold of his devotee and removes all the hurdles in his/her way.
