Devotion is nothing more than knowing oneself.

Nama Article 23rd November 2017

Source: The Vision

RAMANA MAHARSHI ON SURRENDER

However much burden we throw on God, He bears all of it. Since the one Supreme Ruling Power (Parameswara Sakti) is performing all activities, why should we, instead of yielding ourselves to it, constantly think: "I should act in this way; I should act in that way." When we know that the train is bearing all the burdens, why should we who travel in it, instead of placing even our small luggage in it and being happily at ease, suffer by bearing it (our luggage) on our own head?

Higher Power is leading you. Be led by the same. The Higher Power knows what to do and how to do it. Trust it.

***

Devotion is nothing more than knowing oneself. Surrender to the substratum of appearances unreservedly; then, the reality will be left over as the residue.

To use the name of God one must call upon Him and surrender to Him unreservedly

Nama Article 17th October 2012

Talk 426

D.: What is meant by taking the name of God? How to reconcile the following two ideas?

The Bible says: "Do not take the name of God in vain."

The Hindu sastras enjoin taking the name of God all the time.

M.: One should not use the name of God artificially and superficially without feeling. To use the name of God one must call upon Him and surrender to Him unreservedly. After such surrender the name of God is constantly with the man.

Mechanical chanting is the only starting point we can attempt. It matures to love by grace.

Mechanical chanting is the starting phase. It will soon graduate to mental chanting and soon this mental one-pointed chanting will lead to the source of the chant, which is the truth.

The ultimate result of singing God's names is unconditional love towards one and all. Chanting the Divine names is both the means and the end.

The same scriptures also state that one should follow the words of the Guru without any doubts or questions and act accordingly.

Is chanting while doing work considered as meaningful chanting ?

Don't stop chanting for any reason. The rest of the things will be taken care of automatically.

It is not the count or time that matters. It is the intensity that matters.

Complete surrender is another name for jnana or liberation

The easiest way to surrender is to chant the Mahamantra. Continuously chant the Mahamantra

You become that whose name you have been repeating or chanting

Nama Article 13th October 2012

Source: DAY BY DAY WITH BHAGAVAN

17-2-46 Afternoon

The gentleman who asked about creation said, "I never thought I was going to have the good fortune of visiting Bhagavan. But circumstances have brought me here and I find in his presence, without any effort on my part, I am having santi. Apparently, getting peace does not depend on our effort. It seems to come only as the result of grace!" Bhagavan was silent.

Meanwhile, another visitor remarked, "No. Our effort is also necessary, though no one can do without grace."

After some time, Bhagavan remarked, "Mantra japa, after a time, leads to a stage when you become Mantra maya i.e., you become that whose name you have been repeating or chanting. First you repeat the mantra by mouth; later you do it mentally. First, you do this dhyana with breaks. Later, you do it without any break. At that stage you realise you do dhyana without any effort on your part, that dhyana is your real nature. Till then, effort is necessary."

The common question that arises in everyone is 'What is essential to attain God – Grace or effort?'

In the other paths, you take some effort and then wait for God's grace. In Bhakti, you depend only on the grace of God and nothing else. That makes Bhakti an easier way to attain the end-state

To remain in the Holy Feet of the Guru as a 'nobody' (zero); to remain like a doll in his hand. This is the only effort that can be taken by us

Likewise, God takes hold of his devotee and removes all the hurdles in his/her way.

Talk 482.

Devotee.: Quite true. I see the force of the words. But yet are not mantras, etc., helpful?

BHAGAWAN RAMANA MAHARISHI.: They are helpful. What is mantra? You are thinking of the simple sounds of the mantra. Repetition of the same excludes all other thoughts. The single thought of the mantra japa remains.

That too drops away giving place to the Infinite Self, which is the mantra itself.

Mantra, dhyana, bhakti, etc., are all aids and finally lead to Swarupa, the Self, which is they themselves.

My mother does not like me visiting temples or coming to the Satsang. But shastras ordain that the mother has to be regarded as God and that one should abide by her words. What do I do?

Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji

As per the shastras a child has to obey the parents and abide by their words. Similarly, as per the shastras a wife has to abide by the words of her husband. In all worldly matters one has to abide by their words. However, if any one of them advices against spiritual matters it need not be followed.

Bharata did not accept the kingdom that Kaikeyi had got for his sake because it was against Lord Rama. When Hiranykashipu asked Prahlada to drink poison, he did so happily. Prahlada obeyed him in all matters except when he was told not to utter Bhagavannaama (Lord's Name). So was Meera. She obeyed her husband Rana Kumbha in all matters. But she did not obey only when she was told not to do Krishna Bhakti. But God has indeed showered grace on all of them. Therefore, it is not obligatory to listen to anybody's advice against God.

Realization is the result of the Master's (Guru's) grace, more than teachings, lectures, meditations, etc.

They are only secondary aids, whereas the former is the primary and essential cause.

The same God whom he was worshipping comes as Guru and leads him onward.

Gems from Bhagavan - A Necklace Of Sayings By Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi

I HAVE NOT SAID THAT A GURU IS NOT NECESSARY. But a Guru need not always be in human form. First a person thinks that he is inferior and that there is a superior, allknowing, all powerful God who controls his own and the world's destiny and worships him or does bhakti.

When he reaches a certain stage and becomes fit for enlightenment, the same God whom he was worshipping comes as Guru and leads him onward. That Guru comes only to tell him, 'That God is within yourself. Dive within and realize'. God, Guru and the Self are the same.

I am not familiar with anyone here. I have never spoken to anyone here in all these years of my visit to Sri Ramanasramam. Nobody has bothered me. How can these people know that I am from Chennai………………….
