"Namaghar" - Prayer hall - Singing the divine Names was the core of Sri Shankaradeva's path

SAINT SKETCH – Sri Shankaradeva

All of them have propounded the path of Namakeerthana alone as the way to emancipation in this Kali yuga.

So also from Assam to Gujarat, from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, the heart of all Hari Bhaktas merged at the Lord’s lotus feet, is in unison. And all of them have propounded the path of Namakeerthana alone as the way to emancipation in this Kali yuga.

The hands of a person must be used writing granthas or divine names, or clapping the hands in bhajans

Source : Madhuramurali English Edition

Srimad Bhagavatham

शावौ करौ नो कुरुतः सपर्यां हरेर्लसत्काञ्चनकङ्कणौ वा ।। २-३-२१ ।।

The hands might be adorned with shining jewels like golden bracelets and bangles. But if it does not serve Lord Hari, then they are like the hands of a dead body. This might sound harsh. But Bhagavathas always states such things in this manner to instill great dispassion in us, so that we don't lose sight of the truth in our worldly activities. So the hands of a person must be used in serving Lord Hari like cleaning his temple, or cooking Prasad, or offering Puja, or stringing flower garlands, or decorating the temple with kolams or festoons, or writing granthas or divine names, or clapping the hands in bhajans or grinding sandal paste for Krishnapuja or doing abhishekam for Krishna and so on and so forth!

Chant the Mahamantra Nama kirtan :

Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare

So we must not even waste a second without singing the divine Names or His glories with this tongue of ours given to us by God!

Source : Madhuramurali English Edition

Srimad Bhagavatham

जिह्वासती दार्दुरिकेव सूत न चोपगायत्युरुगायगाथाः ।। २-३-२० ।।

What about our tongue (जिह्वा)? If it does not sing the glories of Bhagavan, the Lord who is sung widely, then such a tongue is like an unchaste woman (असती ) and it can be compared to the tongue of a frog (दार्दुरिकेव). Why? Because the tongue of a frog always keeps making some meaningless sounds and ironically, that very sound invites its death, the snake, which comes to know the whereabouts of the frog with these sounds.

So also if we use our tongues to talk meaningless worldly things, that would only invite Yama and remind him that he has forgotten us! So we must not even waste a second without singing the divine Names or His glories with this tongue of ours given to us by God!

How great is the immense compassion of mahans!

Source : Madhuramurali English Edition

This is the same case with mahAns, who are avatAra purushAs. They accept and hail as bhaktas, even those who do perfunctory, half-hearted bhakti, and protect them. Many people serve a mahan. Many of these won’t even realize how much fortune one must have done to be bestowed with the service of a mahan.

Sometimes, in the name of kainkarya, they might even do apachAra (improper conduct) in their work; sometimes, forgetting the greatness of seva, they would even complain constantly while doing the work; sometimes while doing kainkarya, they might even dare to tell a lie in an urgent heat of a moment. Despite such faults in our kainkarya, just as Sita Devi felt happy even with the ‘flawed’ prostrations of the rakshasis, a mahan, through his causeless compassion, does not see our fault-filled kainkarya or the seva done without understanding its true value.

He simply accepts it with immense joy. Even though he knows everything, he still appears to be completely unaware of our faults and continues to protect those who serve him. How great is the immense compassion of mahans!

If you want your Inner and outer self to shine with the light of God’s Blessings, keep the gem-like Rama Nama on the threshold of your tongue.

The Power of Sweet Speech:

Soft Heart creates Soft Words

Unless we mean it, it will be hypocritical or just an act. Goswami Tulsidas says that we must soften our hearts and minds to soften our words and subsequently soften our actions. So, there is a Krama (order) which means one’s heart influences speech and then influences one’s actions. There is a beautiful Doha is Ramcharita Manas which says:

राम-नाम-मनि -दीप धरु, जीह देहरीं द्वार।

तुलसी भी तर बा हेरहुँ, जौं चा हसि उजि आर ॥

If you want your Inner and outer self to shine with the light of God’s Blessings, keep the gem-like Rama Nama on the threshold of your tongue.

So, the Divine name of the Lord is that potent medicine that makes our hearts softer. This is seen when Sri Rama calls Sabari ‘Charu Bhaashini’. Our Guru Maharaj says that the reason for the Lord to call the old Sabari, ‘Charu Bhaashini’, the one who talks sweetly, even at their first encounter is because Sabari had been incessantly chanting Rama Nama. The Nama has the power to refine us. Like medicine cures our illness, even if we are not aware of the chemical compositions, nama is meant to transform us, even if we chant without complete faith. The other reason that Bhagavan called Sabari ‘Chaaru Bhaashini’ was that all that Sabari spoke was the glory of her Guru.

Apt Counsel for a True Sadhak - HH Maharanyam Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji

While chanting Nama say this to Bhagavan, “ I am eagerly waiting for your grace and mercy to fall upon me. Please bless me with Devotion, Wisdom and Dispassion. Please lead me down the right path. Bless me to move ahead in this path”. This should be the prayer in our minds constantly.

Namakeerthanam along with prayer uttered with utmost sincerity right from the bottom of our hearts will certainly bless us with Devotion, Dispassion and Wisdom (Bhakti, Jnana and Vairagya). Just do the Prayer in the right way!!!

Prahlada counsels his classmates to chant God’s name ‘Narayana! Narayana!’

Source : Madhuramurali English Edition

When Prahlada counsels his classmates to chant God’s name ‘Narayana! Narayana!’ they retort, ‘O, Prahalada! You are the son of the king. Even if you chant ‘Narayana!’ you will have sumptuous meals but what about us?’ To this Prahlada points out, ‘God has already determined all the happenings in not just my life but in all our lives. HE has sent us into this world only after determining these and does not determine them after sending us into the world.

Please check these: Excerpts from a discourse by our Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji

Words of wisdom by a great Gnani and a true bhaktha

Everything in our life is predetermined. All we have to do is to turn and fix our mind on Him!

"To remain how God wills" – being in this state is Bhagavatha Dharmam.

Everything that happened in the past, that happens now, and that will happen in future, are all the will of My Father. Nothing else. Nothing else. We should not get disturbed.

Only the actions that are related to our body is bound by Prarabdham. There is no Prarabdham for mind. As a prudent person, it is only in our hands to control the mind.

Yogirămsuratkumăr used to say, 'If there is faith then there is no fate.'

Remember the Lord always and be ever conscious of the fact that every moment is governed by the will and wish of Sri Krishna

Spiritual success is dependent on oneself and not on the environment.

To remain in the Holy Feet of the Guru as a 'nobody' (zero); to remain like a doll in his hand. This is the only effort that can be taken by us

If you think of God and attain the abode of God, there is no destiny.

When one is afflicted with sorrow, if he persists in prayers and not question the Lord as to why He is putting him into grief, when the difficult times pass, the Lord is pleased and rewards him with a special gift of His grace.

You should not only accept from the bottom of your heart the situation that the Lord keeps you in but also be grateful to Him for that because it is verily the Lord's blessing!

When there is true love, even adversities appear to be blessings

It is not ours to question why, but to submit to the Divine will, and pass through all experiences that fall to our lot, with a free and cheerful heart.

We can resign ourselves to the Will of God and keep away our egosense, only by a continuous remembrance of God

It is a mistake to think that by mere change of situation or activity we can attain to peace

If one does not chant the divine Name of the Lord, the Lord will not interfere with his life. If he does chant the Name of God continuously, the Lord makes his life favorable to him.

Likewise, God takes hold of his devotee and removes all the hurdles in his/her way.

किं दुष्करं नराणां  ? What is difficult for human beings? यन्मनसो निग्रहः सततं  The constant control of the mind.

किं स्मर्त्तव्यं पुरुषैः हरिनाम सदा न यावनी भाषा What is to be remembered by people ? Always the Name of Hari; not the jargon of the unregenerate.

CAUSELESS MERCY

Excerpts from Sri Swamiji's lecture on Ekadasa Skandam, Dec 2011

Once, a Mahan was struck with dysentery. He did not have any money; was very poor. He was admitted into a hospital. At the hospital he was being given drips and other medications. But he did not take notice of all these things. Going up to those who had died, he would chant “Narayana! Narayana!”

The only blessedness (bhAgyam) of that dead one was that he had been admitted in that hospital by chance (yadrucchaya)!

What was the relationship between him and the Sadhu? patram, pushpam, phalam, tOyam! Nothing! Did he do any puja? Did he desire this? That is verily Sadhu krupa!

THE LIFE-GIVING

RIVERS OF DIVINE RASA

Let us take the charitra of Sri Bhagavannama Bodhendra Saraswati Swami. Well after the samadhi of Sri Bodhendra Swami, bhagavatas were once performing bhajan at Sri Bodhendral Mutt (at Govindapuram). After the bhajan, food was also served to them. It is a traditional practice to offer betel leaves to bhagavatas after serving them with food. The person who sold betel leaves was a Muslim man who lived in Aduthurai (a few km away). He did not come on time that day. As they were waiting for him, a few minutes later, the man came running fearfully in great haste. He said, “A sanyasi from this place came to me and chided me in a majestic voice, ‘Bhagavatas have eaten there already and are waiting for the betel leaves.

Why have you not left yet?’ Saying this, he disappeared and I could not see him. Where is he?” The bhagavatas were stunned on hearing this and replied, “He has already taken jeeva samadhi. He is not in his physical body now.”

The bhagavatas then did Rama Nama upadesa to that highly fortunate betel-leaf seller. The man continued to stay in the Bodhendral Mutt and chant Rama Nama, and also came to be called as Kabirdas.

They constantly chant the Divine Name. This is indeed the characteristic of a true sadhu.

SAINT SKETCH – S A R A Y U D A S J I M A H A R A J

Sadhus immerse themselves in the nectar of Bhagavat Guna and lilas, the divine sports of Bhagavan. Srimad Bhagavatam describes how a sadhu leads his life: if someone tells katha, they listen joyfully to it; if there is someone to listen to katha, they tell katha and reminisce Bhagavat guna; if they are alone, they constantly chant the Divine Name. This is indeed the characteristic of a true sadhu.

Of the nava vidha bhakti spoken of by Sri Prahlada,

S A R A Y U D A S J I M A H A R A J's most favorite was Kirtanam through Bhagavat katha. He enjoyed immersing himself in Bhagavat guna through katha.

We must think “Bhagavan is doing this! It is because of Bhagavan’s krupa I am able to do the japa and parayanam”.

Source : Madhuramurali English Edition

ANSWERS AND BEYOND

Sri Swamiji Answers Questions From Devotees

Likewise, when we do sadhanas like nAma japa, Srimad Bhagavatham parayanam, we must think, “Bhagavan is doing this! It is because of Bhagavan’s krupa I am able to do the japa and parayanam”. When we think this way, spiritual progress will happen soon. But, there is one thing. This thought should not just be mere words.

The reason for progressing very slowly even after doing nAma japa is because of the thought of ‘I’, ‘I am doing this, I am thinking this way’. When this thought of ‘I’ becomes less and less, spiritual progress will happen very soon.

The grandest form of jnana-dhaanam is propagating nama and getting another to chant Bhagavan’s name.

KALPATARU DAY MASS PRAYER

As Guru Maharaj spoke about the importance of dhaanam (charity), he outlined that the most important was jnana-dhaanam. Moreover, the grandest form of jnana-dhaanam is propagating nama and getting another to chant Bhagavan’s name. Sri Guruji so lovingly has bestowed upon all of us, the opportunity and responsibility to propagate the message of love and divinity through nama.
