No amount of intellect or genius can help as does Guru’s Grace. Guru’s Grace can bestow knowledge on a person in no time.

Nama Article 24th April  2015

Wish you all happy Sankara Jayanthi and Ramanuja Jayanthi

Excerpts from a discourse by our Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji

In Sringeri Sankara was met and served by a deeply devoted disciple Giri who later became Totakachãrya, showing to the world what devotion to the Guru can do. Though dull headed, Giri, loved his Guru Sankara very deeply. He served Sankara with deep love. One day Giri was late in returning from washing his Guru's clothes. Though it was time for the class to begin and all the students had arrived Sankara waited for this lovable disciple of his. When the disciples wondered and questioned about the delay in beginning the class, Sankara said, "Giri has not yet come!" The whole class burst out laughing. The compassionate heart of the Guru melted with deep warmth as the others laughed at his lovable disciple and the Grace sprung forth from him and engulfed Giri who was still on the banks of the river. The class of scholars was wonderstruck when in a few minutes time 'the dull head' came into the hall clapping and singing the praises of his Guru in eight stanzas in Totaka metre. No amount of intellect or genius can help as does Guru's Grace. Guru's Grace can bestow knowledge on a person in no time. Since that day Giri came to be known as Totakacharaya as the hymn was composed in Totaka metre.

Sri Koorathazhwar was a great disciple of Sri Ramanujacharya. He was a very learned person and a scholar, and although senior to Sri Ramanuja in age, was an epitome of Acharya bhakti and humility. One day, when he and many other disciples were with Sri Ramanuja, a deaf and dumb man came to seek the Acharya's blessings. Sri Ramanuja was intensely moved on seeing the plight of that man who could neither say nor hear the Divine Name of the Lord. Tears filled the eyes of Sri Ramanuja as his compassion poured on a soul who could not attain Vaikunta in that birth simply because of his circumstances. Then Sri Ramanuja asked all his disciples to leave the room immediately and close the door behind them, so that he could be alone with the deaf and dumb man. All the disciples, including Koorathazhwar, left the room. However Koorathazhwar was curious to see what his acharya was going to do. So he peeped in through a window. He saw his acharya place his feet on the head of the deaf and dumb man and bless him, saying that now he would attain Vaikunta. When Koorathazhwar saw this, he broke down and began to cry, lamenting his own fate. Regretting all his learning, scholarship and intellectuality, he cried wishing he had been born deaf, dumb and a simpleton so that he would have had the great fortune of having his Acharya's feet placed on his head, thus attaining life's highest goal so simply and easily!

TO THE UTTER SURPRISE OF EVERYONE, THE BOY WHO HAD NOT SPOKEN A WORD EVER SINCE HE WAS BORN, OPENED HIS MOUTH AND REPEATED AFTER SRI SWAMIJI, 'R A M A' !

Immediately that dumb boy gained divine knowledge and started dancing, singing the Divine Names, `Rama' and `Krishna'

His mother, corrected him saying that, uttering Rama Nama once would do!

The dassi came to have a darshan of Bodhendral and after prostrating to him she left this world through Kabala moksham in front of her guru like how a yogi leave this world

Nama Article - 20th March 2007

Source: The Jap Ji - The Message of Guru Nanak

It is from this Word that the whole creation springs up and returns to It on its dissolution. It is resounding within all of us and man's body is verily God's living temple. The saints of all denominations speak of the same, as the only means by which to reach the ultimate Reality.

The Mohammedans call It "Bang-i-Asmani" or the Voice coming from the Heaven. Shamas Tabrez and Khawaja Hafz Shirazi speak of the same as has already been quoted in the introduction. The Hindus express the same by the words "Nad" (Music of the Spheres), "Akaslz Bani" (the Voice coining from the heavens) and "Udgit" (Music of the Beyond).

St. John , in the Bible, defined it thus:
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
All things were made by Him, and without Him was nothing made that was made."

All mantras we use are based on the science of "Naadam" -- the secrets hidden in sound

Nama Article 13th April 2008

We all use mantras or words all day long -- repetitive, out loud, or silently -- phrases such as "It's hard," or "I'm tired." "I don't know what I'm doing," "It will never happen ... .. I'm stressed," "There's not enough time," or "There's not enough money." We don't even notice them becoming part of our reality by repetition. We act out on what we say, live on how we think. If our mantra is, "I am stressed," we will be stressed. Or if our mantra is, "It's never going to happen, " it's never going to happen.

In the beginning was the word, and the word was God. So powerful are our words to ourselves and to others and the power of positive thinking and expressions of positive thinking through words are very important.

The words in manthras are chosen not only for their meaning as words, but also for a scientific reason that goes far beyond pure definition. All mantras we use are based on the science of "Naadam" -- the secrets hidden in sound.

The roof of our mouth has eighty-four meridian points, all along the upper palate. Mantras were given to us as special gifts. Long ago, highly evolved Rishis went into deep meditation. They began reciting certain sounds that made the tongue hit these meridian points in the mouth in certain combinations.

It's kind of like playing the piano -- if certain notes are struck, a beautiful song is produced. With every word we speak, or in this case the mantras we recite, we hit certain "keys." If the right combination of keys is struck, then the hypothalamus, thalamus, and pituitary in the brain are all stimulated in such a way as to bring our minds into a meditative state, and even into ecstasy.

Which ever combination of letters gave the ancient seers this peaceful feeling or helped them heal their ailments, they passed it on to us. Every single manthram in the vedas are the results of their experience. Nothing is accidental.

I am giving you a name worshipped since the beginning of time by the people of this land, a name familiar to the very animals and birds, the very stones of Hindustan through so many thousands of years

Nama Article 4th January 2016

Name, Faith and Love by Swami Sivananda

GLORY OF RAMA NAM

What is that thing which is superior to Rama even? It is RAM NAM. How? Sri Hanuman told Sri Rama: "O My Lord, there is something superior to Thee. " Sri Rama was quite astonished. He asked Hanuman: "What is that thing, O Hanuman, which is superior to Me?" Hanuman replied: "Hey Prabho, Thou hadst crossed the river with the help of a boat. But I crossed the ocean with the help of (and the power and strength of) Thy Name only. Name is indeed superior to Thee. "

Mahatma Gandhi says: "You must learn to take the name of Rama with full devotion and faith. When you study the Ramayana, you will learn from Tulsidas the divine power of that blessed Name.

"You might ask me why I tell you to use the word RAMA and not one of the many other names of the Creator. True, His Names are as many as and more than the leaves on the yonder tree and I might for instance ask you to use the word God. But what meaning, what associations would it have for you here? In order to enable you to feel anything when repeating the word God, I should have to teach you some English. I should have to explain to you the foreign people's thoughts and associations.

"But in telling you to repeat the name of RAMA, I am giving you a name worshipped since the beginning of time by the people of this land, a name familiar to the very animals and birds, the very stones of Hindustan through so many thousands of years. You all know the story of Ahalya? No, I see you don't. But you will soon learn it when you study the Ramayana. You will learn how a stone by the roadside sprang to life at the touch of Rama's foot as he passed by. You must learn to repeat the blessed Name of Rama with sweetness and such devotion that the birds and beasts will pause for a moment to listen to you; the very trees will bend their leaves towards you, stirred by the divine melody of that Name. And when you are able to do this, I tell you, I will come all the way on foot from Bombay as on a pilgrimage to hear you. In His sweet Name lies a power which can cure all our ills. "
