To repeat Your name is to string pearls together.

Nama Article 6th Sep 2016

Sant Tukaram

To repeat Your name is to string pearls together.

The pleasure in your manifested form is always new.

I have ceased to desire the unembodied God.

Your worshippers do not seek liberation.

With You, it is still possible to give and to receive.

What use is the place where a dish sat when it is taken away?

Tuka says, give me the gift of freedom from fear.

After all, O Lord who pervades the world, I have given the world You.

In the sameway, one who finds no peace due to mental agony caused by life's travails will realize the worth of the Mahamantra quite well.

The more Ramdas meditated on and uttered His name, the greater the relief and joy he felt.

STRUGGLE AND INITIATION

Swami Papa Ramdas

For nearly a year, Ramdas struggled on in a world full of cares, anxieties and pains. It was a period of terrible stress and restlessness — all of his own making. In this utterly helpless condition, full of misery: "Where is relief? Where is rest?" this was the heart's cry of Ramdas. The cry was heard, and from the Great Void came the voice: "Despair not! Trust Me and thou shalt be free!" — and this was the voice of Ram. These encouraging words of Ram proved like a plank thrown towards a man struggling for very life in the stormy waves of a raging sea. The great assurance soothed the aching heart of helpless Ramdas, like gentle rain on thirsting earth.

Thenceforward, a part of the time that was formerly totally devoted to worldly affairs was taken up for the meditation of Ram who, for that period, gave him real peace and relief. Gradually love for Ram — the Giver of peace — increased. The more Ramdas meditated on and uttered His name, the greater the relief and joy he felt. Nights, which are free from worldly duties, were, in course of time, utilised for Ram Bhajan with scarcely one or two hours' rest. His devotion for Ram progressed by leaps and bounds.

During the day, when cares and anxieties were besetting him due to monetary and other troubles, Ram was coming to his aid in unexpected ways. So, whenever free from worldly duties, be the period ever so small, he would meditate on Ram and utter His name. Walking in the streets he would be uttering, "Ram, Ram". Ramdas was now losing attraction for the objects of the world. Sleep, except for one or two hours in the night, was given up for the sake of Ram. Fineries in clothes and dress were replaced by coarse Khaddar. Bed was substituted by a bare mat. Food, first, two meals were reduced to one meal a day and after sometime this too was given up for plantains and boiled potatoes — chillies and salt were totally eschewed. No taste but for Ram; meditation of Ram continued apace. It encroached upon the hours of the day and the so-called worldly duties.

At this stage one day, Ramdas' father came to him, sent by Ram, and calling him aside, gave him the Upadesh of Ram-Mantram — "Sri Ram, Jai Ram, Jai Jai Ram!" assuring him that if he repeated this Mantram at all times, Ram would give him eternal happiness. This initiation from the father — who has thereafter been looked upon by Ramdas as Gurudev — hastened on the aspirant in his spiritual progress. Off and on he was prompted by Ram to read the teachings of Sri Krishna — THE BHAGAVAD GITA, Buddha — LIGHT OF ASIA, Jesus Christ — NEW TESTAMENT, Mahatma Gandhi — YOUNG INDIA and ETHICAL RELIGION. The young plant of Bhakti of Ram was thus nurtured in the electric atmosphere created by the influence of these great men on the mind of humble Ramdas. It was at this time that it slowly dawned upon his mind that Ram was the only Reality and all else was false. Whilst desires for the enjoyment of worldly things were fast falling off, the consideration of 'me' and 'mine' was also wearing out. The sense of possession and relationship was vanishing. All thought, all mind, all heart, all soul was concentrated on Ram, Ram covering up and absorbing everything.

Chant Mahamantra and realize the ultimate. What is that ultimate, is the decision of Krishna. This is verily our philosophy.

Nama Article 4th Sep 2016

Source: Madhuramurali

There has been a lot of questions if our philosophy is Advaita or Visishtadvaitha or Dvaita or AchintyaBhedaabheda, etc. When we brought this to our beloved SriSwamiji's notice, this is the divine response from Sri Swamiji:

'Even amongst the various mathas(sects) which accept the Vedas, there are some sub-sects with in the Vedic Religion of Sanatana Dharma which do not accept a Supreme God like Sankhya system of philosophy. We generally know only three main philosophies in Vedanta – Advaitham, Vishistaadvaitham and Dvaitham, but there are many more systems of philosophies like Suddhaadvaitham by SriVallabhacharya, Eka-Deiva-Vaadam by an Assamese Acharya (Sri Sankaradeva), Sivaadvaitham by Sri Appayya Dikshitar and many more! So there are many systems of philosophies like this in this world!

Even with in Advaitha systems, there are many subsects like AjaataVaadam, Shrusti DhrustiVaadam, Dhrusti Shrusti Vaadam and so on. Similarly in Sri Vaishnava Samparadaya philosophy there are two main subsects – Vadakalai and Thenkalai...'

Sri Swamiji says whatever philosophy these Mahaans have established, we never criticize, nor do we object to any Mahatma. We find all philosophies acceptable.

What is our philosophy then?

Chant Mahamantra and realize the ultimate

What is that ultimate, is the decision of Krishna.

This is verily our philosophy.

When will I recognize the worth of Mahamantra Kirtan?

Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji

A man travelling several kilometres distance in the severe heat of summer feels exhausted.

At that moment it is cool water rather than food which will lessen his fatigue. In the sameway, one who finds no peace due to mental agony caused by life's travails will realize the worth of the Mahamantra quite well.

Ram Nam is unfailing in its action, infallible in its operation.

Nama Article 18th Jul 2016

POWER OF 'RAM NAM' by Swami Sivananda

Ram Nam has a transforming effect not only on the psycholgical but also the biological personality. Even physical ailments can be overcome by the chanting of the Divine Name. Ram Nam is unfailing in its action, infallible in its operation. Ram Nam, properly understood, is the same as Omkara, the symbol of the Absolute, and Rama to the true devotee is the Absolute itself. Sri Rama is all-pervading; He is in the heart of all beings as the Antaryamin. What a power and glory should His Name possess! Even ordinary names of things of the world have the power of stimulating a corresponding mode of consciousness in man. How much more powerful should the Name of God be!

If you practice this, all your actions will get transformed into prayer. Performance of duties, side by side with recital of God’s Names will then become easy.

BHAGAVATHA DHARMAM - First Skandham - Swami Abhedananda

Devoid of Bhakthi (devotion), Jnana (knowledge) and Vairagya (detachment) are useless. Hatred is man's greatest enemy. Listen to the stories of God. Also try to follow the principles underlying those stories in actual life.

Man's spiritual uplift is impossible if he cannot get rid of anger. Prayer to God should not be postponed till the completion of house-hold duties. Attend to those duties after finishing your prayer. If you practice this, all your actions will get transformed into prayer. Performance of duties, side by side with recital of God's Names will then become easy.

Who does not crave for respect, but respects others, is the one fit to repeat the Name of Hari

Nama Article 6th Jul 2016

POWER OF 'RAM NAM' by Swami Sivananda

"Trinadapi sunichena tarorapi sahishnuna, Amanina manadena kirtaniyah sada harih—He who is humbler than a blade of grass, more tolerant than a tree, who does not crave for respect, but respects others, is the one fit to repeat the Name of Hari."

God helps those who help themselves. The best possible effort that one is capable of exercising under the intellectual circumstances provided by God should be put forth, and only beyond this effort, should one seek the grace of God. Idleness is not self-surrender. Surrender of the self to God becomes complete only when the individual consciousness is flooded over the love for the Divine. God's grace descends when the efforts exercised are found to be inadequate for the realisation of God.
