Guru's Grace protects one from suffering the clutches of fate

A lamp cannot be lit if it does not have a wick. Oil is mandatory too. If there is no oil, the flame would consume the wick completely. It is the oil that protects the wick from being consumed by the flame. It is the same oil that ensures that the flame stays lit.

Likewise, if one does not have the Grace of the Guru, one's karma will cause immense suffering. This is akin to a wick in a lamp without oil.

The oil can be likened to the Grace of the Guru. Karma fears to go near the one who is shielded by the Guru's Grace. Just as how the oil protects the wick from being consumed by the fiery flame, the Guru's Grace protects one from suffering the clutches of fate.
