மும்மை சால் உலகுக்கு எல்லாம் - மூன்று என்னும் தொகை பொருந்திய (வானம், பூமி, பாதாளம்) என்னும் உலகங்கள் யாவற்றிற்கும்;

மூல மந்திரத்தை - ஆதாரமாய்ப் பொருந்திய மந்திரத்தை;

முற்றும் தம்மையே  தமர்க்கு நல்கும் - முழுவதுமாகத் தம்மையை வழிபடும் அடியார்கட்கு அளிக்கும்;

தனிப்பெரும் பதத்தை - ஒப்பற்ற சிறப்பு மிக்க சொல்லை;

தானே - தான் தனித்தே;

இம்மையே - இந்தப் பிறவியிலேயே;

எழுமை நோய்க்கும் மருந்தினை - எழுவகைப் பிறப்புக்களாகிய நோய் வராமல் தடுக்கும் மருந்தை;

'இராமன்' என்னும் - இராமன் என்கின்ற;

செம்மை சேர் நாமம் தன்னை - சிறப்புப் பொருந்திய திருநாமத்தை; கண்களின் தெரியக் கண்டான் - தன் கண்களினால் (அவ்வம்பில்) தெளிவாகப்  பார்த்தான்.

Temple Treasures: Archavatara Leela

She used to feed him everyday looking at his face and stomach, but, today she looked only at his face and thought, “No one can be equal to my Rangan’s beauty!” She had fed him one full pot of rice, then, the door opened and somebody came in. The grandmother turned to look who that was and she saw her grand son Rangan! She was surprised and turned to where she was feeding the little boy. There, she saw Thiruvarangan Himself!

Thiruvarangan in His divine voice said, “You were always thinking about Me, You were always chanting my name. I came to be here with you for sometime, till your grandson returned.”

“Ranga! I don’t know what I have done to get Your grace. But, I have done a sin by just feeding you with old rice and mAvaDu.” Listening to the grandmother’s lament, Thiruvarangan blessed them saying, “Your old rice and mAvaDu is my favorite food!” After blessing them both, Bhagavan disappeared.

Since this leela happened on the 3rd day of Panguni Adi Brahmothsavam, bhaktas at Sri Rangam who came to know of this, made Jeeyarpuram’s old fermented rice and mAvaDu as part of the Panguni Adi Brahmothsavamon the 3rd day. This old rice and mAvaDu utsavam has been happening since then.

This leela vaibhavam was performed by Thiruvarangan, who is the Archavathara roopam in Sri Rangam, for the sake of His devotee, Jeeyarpuram Lakshmi pAtti.

दैत्येन्द्रार्तिहरौषधं त्रिजगतां सञ्जीवनैकौषधम् ।

भक्तात्यन्तहितौषधं भवभयप्रध्वंसनैकौषधं

श्रेयप्राप्तिकरौषधं पिब मनः श्रीकृष्ण दिव्यौषधम्॥

which removes all delusions,

which inspires the minds of sages,

which saves Prahlada from all his trials and tribulations,

which gives life to the three worlds,

which does immense good to the devotees and

which is the only remedy to ward off the fear of samsara

His Holiness Sri Abhinava Vidyatirtha Swamigal was the 35th Jagadguru of  Sringeri Sri Saradha Peetam. Born on November 13, 1917 the young Srinivasa was an illustrious student.  At the age of 14, he was ordained into Sanyasa Asrama by the  then Peetadhipati and Jivan Mukta Sri Chandrasekara Bharati. An great tapasvi and and yogi, Sri Abhinava Vidyatirtha Swamigal was an able administrator too. He traveled across the country spreading the ideals of Sanathana Dharma and Sri Adi Sankara.   A beautiful compilation of the Acharya's discourses has been published in a book called 'karuNai kaDal thandha kanivAna muthukkaL'.  The following is a short excerpt from this book.

'The Greatness of Mahamantra'

The Divine Name of the Lord rescues even the wickedest of the wicked. Fire when touched, either knowingly or unknowingly, burns the hand. Likewise, it is the nature of the Divine Name of the Lord to destroy the sins of the one who utters it. Therefore, regardless of the time and work we are involved in, we should always keep chanting the Divine Name of the Lord mentally. All are desirous of doing Mantra japa. There is a Mantra for this. This Mantra can be chanted in any manner. It has been said that this Mantra can be chanted by all – whether one is of pure mind or not, whether one follows religious discipline or not.

Well! What is that Mantra? It is verily

"HARE RAMA HARE RAMA RAMA RAMA HARE HARE!

HARE KRISHNA HARE KRISHNA KRISHNA KRISHNA HARE HARE!" 

All can chant this Mantra. Regular chanting of this Mantra would earn the blessings of the Lord, purify us and we would attain the purpose of life. Nevertheless, commonly, what do people do? They eat, sleep, loiter around and finally die. Animals lead this kind of life. Is there any difference between the animals and us if our lives were also spent in the same way? Therefore, we should always be chanting the Divine Name of the Lord.

After leaving the city of Mysore, Sri Shridhara Ayyaval passed through many cities and villages. He had taken to 'Unchchavriti' way of life wherein one goes on the streets singing the Divine Names of the Lord, accepting things offered as alms and partaking of the same after offering it to the Lord.

He would stop for a day or two in each village and teach the mass the essence of the scriptures. He would chant the Divine Names of the Lord and speak of its glory and ease of chanting it. After winning the hearts of the people there and hearing them chant with devotion, he would continue his journey.

Thus, moving about, Sri Shridhara Ayyaval reached the town of Tirichirapalli in Tamil Nadu, South India. He continued spreading his message of Nama Kirtan by discoursing in a simple language which helped people comprehend the profound truth with ease. His discourses emphasized devotion towards both Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva without bias. Every evening he visited the temple of Lord Shiva and spent the afternoons in chanting divine names and reading scripture.

The king of Tirichirapalli was a devout Vaishnavaite (devotee of Lord Vishnu). A few people, who had heard the discourses of Sri Shridhara Ayyaval felt that he had more leaning towards Lord Shiva than Lord Vishnu. They voiced their opinion to the king and wanted him to test the devotion of Sri Shridhara Ayyaval towards Lord Vishnu. The king, who was a great devotee himself, did not like the idea of testing a saint and also feared that it might bring downfall to him and his kingdom. However, the desire to know the heart of this saint sprouted in him and hence he decided to test Sri Shridhara Ayyaval without malice and hit upon a plan. He ordered the priests to dress up Sri Mathrubhuteshwara, Lord Shiva in Tirichirapalli as Lord Krishna and take Him in procession. He thought that Sri Sridhara Ayyaval's reaction would indicate his bias, should he have any. When the procession passed through the home of Sri Shridhara Ayyaval, he was meditating on Lord Shiva. Once out of his trance, he came out of his home hurriedly and finding Lord Krishna there spontaneously prayed to Lord Krishna "Oh! Lord Krishna! When will I spend every moment of my life in meditating on your Lotus Feet by reminding myself of the transitory nature of this world, being humble, knowing my deficiencies, turning blind to other's faults, being compassionate towards all living beings, being a servant of the devotees of the Lord and eyeing both joy and sorrow alike?"

He thus composed 12 verses known as 'Krishna Dwadasa Manjari'. In a few verses in this, he did not hesitate to sing that Lord Krishna's vision was not easy for Lord Shiva Himself! Hearing this, the king was relieved and the people who had induced him to test fell at Sri Shridhara Ayyaval's feet and apologized for their ignorance and arrogance. Knowing Sri Shridhara Ayyaval to be a great saint of uncommon devotion and glory, the king wanted him to stay in his city forever.

Lord Siva himself does not cease to chant the Divine Name Rama even for a moment out of such taste and love for that Name

The path blazed by Jeyadeva was followed by Krishna Chaitanya, Tukaram, Meera Bai, and others in North India. Correspondingly there lived in South India, Purandaradasa, Bhodendra, Ayyaval, Sadguru Swami and others.

A friend of Gandhiji versed in religious lore who read Gandhiji's remarks on Rama Nama some time ago wrote to say that Rama Nama is an alchemy which can transform the body. Recitation of Rama Nama is also a means of assuring purity. In the case of a man who repeats Rama Nama from the heart, discipline and self control will come to him.

Therefore as Gandhiji Says that a man should preserve and ceaselessly repeat Rama Nama during all his waking hours.

Ultimately it would remain with their even dying their sleep. God's grace would fill them with perfect health of body, mind and spirit.

कामानिर्वृतचेतसामपि विभो नाशापि नः शोभते ॥

 

Now that we have become Your devotees, Your holy names have affectionately created a jubilant festival in our mouths. Your bodily splendor, like a dark raincloud, has become the black decorative of our eyes, and the music of Your flute has become the ornament of our ears. We no longer take pleasure in material desires. O Almighty Lord, material desires no longer appear beautiful to us.

चतुर्भिर्यद्वर्णैः स्फुटमघटि नारायणपदम् ।

तदेतद्गायन्तो वयमनिशमात्मानमधुना

पुनीमो जानीमो न हरिपरितोषाय किमपि ॥

Extracting the four syllables that are the heart of the four Vedas, Lord Hari makes the word Narayana. Day and night chanting this name, we become purified. We do not know any other better way to please Lord Hari.

The purpose of all rituals and duties is to please the Lord. Nothing else pleases the Lord as much as the chanting of the Divine names. So, chanting the divine names of the Lord is sufficient.

No one else pleases me the most than the ones who Chant Mahamantra!

If you want something from someone, you have to make him happy. Only then you will receive what you want. Similarly, if you want God's grace,……..

विष्णुपुराण

तत्कर्म यन्न बन्धाय सा विद्या या विमुक्तये

आयासायापरं कर्म विद्याऽन्या शिल्पनैपुणम्

Vishnupurana

That is action, which doesn't lead to binding; that is knowledge, which leads to liberation.  All other actions are mere chores of arduousness; all other sciences are plain craftsmanship.

Man feels that only the most difficult is the highest, the most difficult way is the best way. This is a very wrong notion

If you want God alone, why do you accept the existence of anything else ?

That love, can sprout only by his grace. His grace descends when we chant the Mahamantra.

Those who are ready to accept this simple Mahamantra, we shall give this Mahamantra to those with love.

kalakshebo na kartavyah, kshenamaayuh kshane kshane, yamasya karuna naasti, kartavyam hari kirtanam.

Namakirtan is definitely the easiest way. But our illusion (maya) would not allow us to do even that. Hence we should not get caught in the illusion. One should always catch hold of the Divine Name with out indulging in any pomp and show.

Bhagawan Nama Bodendra Saraswati Swamigal puts forth his findings in the following words, "Since it is so easy and simple, none takes to it!

Would it not amount to grave injustice if one shows a difficult path to the world?

There are many ways. But the simplest and the easiest way is by chanting the "Hare Rama.." Mahamantra.

After ensuring all these if our mind is not pure there is no use of any of the above. For keeping our mind clean, Chanting the Names of Krishna is the only way.

They are for those who don't believe in simple prayers.

Smallest dharma is verily Chanting the Divine Name (Namakirtan) and ignorance ['ajnaana'] the worst fear

The genuine seeker alone will be able to spot it

Secret that will help you realize happiness in whatever you do

Every moment of our life that is spent without the thought of God is indeed a waste.

Contemplate Krishna's name every moment; your mind will become steady

Death awaits your day with its jaws open heartlessly, And yet daring you are to live on unperturbed, Without seeking the real solution, Which goes by the name "liberation"

Every moment of your life should be taken as His gift.  Be rest assured that every incident that happens is by His grace and happens for your well-being.

The thought that seize out one's mind for life long period would surely, strongly surface during the last breath

That unshakable faith in Rama Nama remained with him till his last breath.

The human body is a rare boon to embodied souls and that too is very transient (momentary, short-lived, temporary)

रसगङ्गाधर

किं मित्रमन्ते सुकृतं न लोकाः

किं ध्येयमीशस्य पादं न शोकाः ।

किं काम्यमव्याजसुखं न भोगाः

किं जल्पनीयं हरिनाम नान्यत् ॥

Who is a friend in the end?  Good deed(s), not people. What should be contemplated upon The Lord's feet, not sorrows. What should be desired?  Un-abound happiness, not indulgences.

What should be prattled?  Only the name of Sri Hari, nothing else.

किं दुष्करं नराणां  ? What is difficult for human beings? यन्मनसो निग्रहः सततं  The constant control of the mind.

किं स्मर्त्तव्यं पुरुषैः ? हरिनाम सदा न यावनी भाषा What is to be remembered by people ? Always the Name of Hari; not the jargon of the unregenerate.

Only the actions that are related to our body is bound by Prarabdham. There is no Prarabdham for mind. As a prudent person, it is only in our hands to control the mind.

May Krishna's holy name, which is a reservoir of all transcendental happiness, the destruction of Kali-yuga's sins, the most purifying of all purifying things, the saintly person's food as he traverses the path to the spiritual world, the pleasure-garden where the voices of the greatest saints, philosophers, and poets play, the life of the righteous, and the seed of the tree of religion, bring transcendental auspiciousness to you all.
