Sri Guru Granth Sahib – Guru Nanak

 

नामु नव निधि गुर ते पाए ॥

हरि किरपा ते हरि वसै मनि आए ॥

राम राम करतिआ सुखु सांति सरीर ॥

अंतरि वसै न लागै जम पीर ॥

आपे साहिबु आपि वजीर ॥

नानक सेवि सदा हरि गुणी गहीर ॥

 

The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is the nine treasures. It is obtained from the Guru.

By the Lord's Grace, the Lord comes to dwell in the mind.

Chanting the Name of the Lord, Raam, Raam, the body becomes peaceful and tranquil.

He dwells deep within - the pain of death does not touch Him.

He Himself is our Lord and Master; He is His Own Advisor.

O Nanak, serve the Lord forever; He is the treasure of glorious virtue.

Working for the Perfect Guru, no one goes away empty-handed. ||1||

The desires of the mind are fulfilled, when the Treasure of the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is obtained.

The Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts, is always with you; recognize Him as the Creator.

By Guru's Grace, your face shall be radiant. Chanting the Naam, you shall receive the benefits of giving charity and taking cleansing baths.

Desire, anger and greed are eliminated, and all egotistical pride is abandoned. ||2||

Chanting the Name of God, the mind is soothed and pacified.

Everyone searches for Him in different ways, but the search is so difficult, and He cannot be found. ||1||

Chanting, deep meditation and penance, wandering over the face of the earth, the performance of austerities with the arms stretched up to the sky -

the Lord is not pleased by any of these means, though one may follow the path of Yogis and Jains. ||2||

The Ambrosial Naam, the Name of the Lord, and the Praises of the Lord are priceless; he alone obtains them, whom the Lord blesses with His Mercy.

Joining the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, Nanak lives in the Love of God; his life-night passes in peace. ||3||

जे वेला वखतु वीचारीऐ ता कितु वेला भगति होइ ॥
अनदिनु नामे रतिआ सचे सची सोइ ॥
इकु तिलु पिआरा विसरै भगति किनेही होइ ॥
मनु तनु सीतलु साच सिउ सासु न बिरथा कोइ ॥
मेरे मन हरि का नामु धिआइ ॥
साची भगति ता थीऐ जा हरि वसै मनि आइ ॥

Consider the time and the moment-when should we worship the Lord?

Night and day, one who is attuned to the Name of the True Lord is true.

If someone forgets the Beloved Lord, even for an instant, what sort of devotion is that?

One whose mind and body are cooled and soothed by the True Lord-no breath of his is wasted. ||

O my mind, meditate on the Name of the Lord.

True devotional worship is performed when the Lord comes to dwell in the mind. ||

If you want God alone, why do you accept the existence of anything else ?

This exercise should go on continually until doing japa has become as natural as breathing.

I am a sacrifice to my Guru, who has implanted the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, within me.

In the utter darkness of the wilderness, He showed me the straight path. ||1||

The Lord of the universe, the Cherisher of the world, He is my breath of life.

Here and hereafter, he takes care of everything for me. ||1||

Meditating on Him in remembrance, I have found all treasures, respect, greatness and perfect honor.

Remembering His Name, millions of sins are erased; all His devotees long for the dust of His feet. ||2||

If someone wishes for the fulfillment of all his hopes and desires, he should serve the one supreme treasure.

He is the Supreme Lord God, infinite Lord and Master; meditating on Him in remembrance, one is carried across. ||3||

I have found total peace and tranquility in the Society of the Saints; my honor has been preserved.

To gather in the Lord's wealth, and to taste the food of the Lord's Name - Nanak has made this his feast. ||4||

Guru Nanak realised the great truth of the brotherhood of religions. He preached the universal brotherhood of man and the fatherhood of God to all people.

Guru Nanak felt that it would be improper to postpone Nama Smarana or remembering the Name of the Lord, even by a single breath, because no one could tell whether the breath that had gone in would come out or not. Nanak says, "We are men of one breath. I know not a longer time-limit".

 

Guru Nanak calls him alone a true saint who remembers the Name of the Lord with every incoming and outgoing breath. The ideal is practical and within the reach of every man. He tells the people not to lose any time but to begin at once. He also says that there are no barriers of race, class, caste, creed or colour which check the progress of any in reaching the goal. He realised the great truth of the brotherhood of religions. He preached the universal brotherhood of man and the fatherhood of God to all people.

The benefits of Chanting the Divine Name may be grouped under physical, moral, mental and spiritual aspects of the inner communion.

 

Divine Name (Naam) keeps the mind and body in a state of equipoise (state of being balanced). Peace reigns supreme in its devotee; the ramifications of mind are done away with forever. All lusts cease to have their hold on the mind. The brain gets a soothing balm. It puts an end to wasteful hurry, and with it go all nervous tensions and mental strains and stress.

 

Naam gives one immunity from all bodily and worldly pains and troubles. By withdrawing the attention within, the mind is stilled and the soul is freed of all mental conflicts. Even the sense of egotism itself-the most ancient malady-loses itself into airy nothing and with it, the perpetual dance of coming in and going out of the world comes to an end. The process of transmigration of tlie soul is but the natural concomitant of the self-assertive will or egotism.

The Path of the Divine Name

Sri Charansingh ji Maharaj says, "The matchstick has fire within it. But we are not able to see it, and so not able to make use of the fire. We will not be able to see the fire as long as we do not scratch the matchstick against the match box walls by discovering this fact using our intellect. In the same way, Nãma always rings in our hearts. It rings in the hearts of the Sãdhus just as it does, in the hearts of bandits. There is no discrimination based on place, caste, religion etc.

Different Mahãns from different places, castes and religions have tried to induce in us, the quest to attain the only spiritual concept namely, the Divine Name. It is the same 'Nãma' that Sikhs term as 'Hari Kirtan', Sages call as 'Rama Nãma', Islamic preachers call as 'inner voice' and the Christ calls as 'plasms'.

Just as fire is hidden in the matchstick, the Lord has hidden the treasure of Nãma within us and has given the its secret to our Guru. Rather than reading different texts using our mind and intellect, the only way to attain God is by surrendering unto the lotus feet of Mahãtmas, getting the Upadesa and performing Nãma Japa continuously."

It is from this Word that the whole creation springs up and returns to It on its dissolution. It is resounding within all of us and man's body is verily God's living temple. The saints of all denominations speak of the same, as the only means by which to reach the ultimate Reality.

The Mohammedans call It "Bang-i-Asmani" or the Voice coming from the Heaven. Shamas Tabrez and Khawaja Hafz Shirazi speak of the same as has already been quoted in the introduction. The Hindus express the same by the words "Nad" (Music of the Spheres), "Akaslz Bani" (the Voice coining from the heavens) and "Udgit" (Music of the Beyond).

St. John , in the Bible, defined it thus:
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
All things were made by Him, and without Him was nothing made that was made."
