Bhaja Govindham – Adi Shankara

 

मूढ़ जहीहि धनागमतृष्णाम्, कुरु सद्बुद्धिमं मनसि वितृष्णाम्।

यल्लभसे निजकर्मोपात्तम्, वित्तं तेन विनोदय चित्तं ॥

भज गोविन्दं भज गोविन्दं गोविन्दं भज मूढ़मते ।

 

O deluded one; give up your craving for wealth. Make your mind free from desire and and take up the path of righteousness.

 

Be happy with what ever you get as a result of your past actions (karma).

 

O deluded minded friend, Chant the Divine Name Govinda, Chant the Divine Name Govinda, Chant the Divine Name Govinda.

By chanting the Name of Bhagavãn one attains Atma Jnana, Jivan Mukti state

 

Accumulate the wealth of the Lord's Name; that wealth does not go anywhere

 

Nothing we earn today would come with us to the final destination but only the Divine Name WILL

 

For the ones who are lost in the worldly activities, indeed there is no higher gain than the Chanting of Divine Names

 

Lord Rama says, "Any accumulated wealth will dissolve in due time. Any position of power attained will come to an end. All the relations (children, wife) come to an end in death. There is nothing in this world that is permanent."

 

I spent all my energy and all my moments in life acquiring all of these possessions and wealth and now......I cannot get back even one moment

 

Just as wealth accrued by a man is useful to the world and for future generations, a man's bhakti and the power of Nama gives strength to innumerable people

 

Divine Name Rama is the real wealth in this world for all because it is the treasure which will not be reduced by spending and which no one can loot.

 

The Name of the Lord - this alone is my wealth. I do not tie it up to hide it, nor do I sell it to make my living.

Swami Papa Ramdas

 

Bhakti is the beginning; Bhakti is the end. Bhakti is the way; Bhakti is the goal. Jnana and Karma are only necessary props on which is hoisted the majestic dome of Bhakti. God says, I am the same to all beings but My devotees are dear to Me". So, true devotion is based on the equality of vision. Samadarshan gives knowledge and peace. Bhakti gives pure love and Premanand. Knowledge enlightens and upholds; devotion yields thrills of joy and ecstasy. The two combined make Purna Yoga. Behold God as all, and still be His child and servant. You are at once He and His child. God is His own devotee. He is a mystery, but a revealed mystery - revealed in love and joy. To be ever singing His name and glories is to be in tune with Him. Beloved Ram is captured within our heart. "Where can You go, O Beloved? Thou art always in Thy child."

 

Surrender to Him, and He looks after you, plans and arranges everything for the best for you. He is the all-loving Divine Mother. Don't give up evening Bhajan. All of you join in it. More and more of Nam Sankirtan or Smaran together! Let the Name ring, and ring on, to awaken in the hearts of you all, the inexpressible bliss of Prem. Love to you all !

Having compassion of the Lord as the foundation, the one which has no rules, the one which can eradicate the force of Kali, Namakirtanam is the only resort.

 

For all questions he had only one reply, "One should perform Krishna Namakirtan"

 

When its recitation commences with the Divine Name Hari and concludes with the same, it is a clear and significant indication that the essence of all Vedas is about chanting the Divine Name of Hari.

 

The essence of the endless Vedas is this : Seek the shelter of God and repeat His name with all thy heart.

 

Essence of the Vedas and all the holy scriptures is "Repeat the name of Narayana." Without the remembrance of Hari, all other practices, such as rituals and austerities, are only futile exertions.

 

Uttering the Name of the God is real essense

Divine glories of all the Divine names like Vishnu, Narayana are all contained in the Divine Name of Rama

 

सर्वेषां हरिनाम्नां हि वैभवं रामनामतः |

ज्ञातुं मया विशेषेण तस्माच्छ्रीनाम सञ्जप ||

 

All glories of the Divine Names of Hari have emanated only from the Divine Name of Rama. No one can comprehend the glories of the Divine Name of Rama. All should Chant the Divine Name of Rama.

Glory of Rama Nama

 

Rama is indeed the highest teaching

 

This is the essence of all Vedas. This is the greatest among all mantras. Nectarine Rama Nama is the heart of Vedas.

 

Rama Nama is the very essence ('saram') of all Epics, Shastras and the Vedas

 

Realizing thus, the wise ones, the knowers of the supreme Reality; filled with fervour-bhava, meaning ardent longing for the supreme Reality; worship me by Chanting my Divine names

 

Only the two letter supreme Divine Name Rama Nama would grant liberation.

 

Rama Nama can grant all wishes at all times. Rama Nama can relieve you from any difficulty. The supreme Rama Nama could bestow all auspicious things. Let this Rama Nama be hailed everywhere.

रामनामांशतो जाता ब्रह्माण्डाः कोटि कोटिशः |

रामनाम्नि परे धाम्नि संस्थिताः स्वामिभिः सह ||

 

It is only from the Divine Name of Rama the creation of crores of Brahmandas has happened. Hence the crores of Brahmandas (entire cosmic) and all the deities are inherent in the Divine Name of Rama.

 

स्वभाविकी तथा ज्ञानक्रियाध्याः शक्तयः शुभाः |

रामनामांशतो जाताः सर्वलोकेषु पूजिताः ||

 

Hence the natural attributes of the Para Bhrama like Gnyana (omniscient), Bala (omnipotence), Aishwarya (Lordship), Shakthi (empowerment), Kriya (religious or clean act) are all present in the Divine Name of Rama and is worshipped at all times.

 

The general definition of the word Bhagavan is given as,

 

aisvaryasya samagrasya, viryasya yasasah sriyah

jnana-vairagyayos' caiva, sannam bhaga itingana

 

Bhagavan, the Supreme Lord, is thus defined as "He who is inseparably replete with the six inconceivable qualities of wealth, power, fame, beauty, knowledge and renunciation."

(Vishnu Purana 6.5.47)

ஒரே நேரத்தில், நம் வாயினால் ஒரே ஒரு நாமத்தைதான் சொல்ல முடியும். ஆனால் ஒரு இடத்தில், ஆயிரம் பக்தர்கள் இருந்து நாமகீர்த்தனம் செய்தால், அத்தனை பேர் செய்யும் கீர்த்தனங்களையும் காது கேட்கின்றது . அதனால், நமக்கு ஆயிரம் நாமங்கள் சொன்ன பலன் ஒரு க்ஷணத்தில் கிடைத்து விடுகின்றது.

 

We could Chant the Divine Name only once at a time. However when 1000 devotees gather and Chant the Divine Names we would be able to hear all the Chanting through our ears. Hence we would get the benefit of Chanting the Divine Name 1000 times at once.

By the very hearing of Lord's holy Name one is totally purified

Hearing whose glory all are cleansed of their impurities at once.

This shloka in Srimad Bhagavatham explains that one gets many auspicious benefits immediately even on hearing the Divine Names of the Lord.

If you are not able to perform Nama Sankirtan, at least listen to Nama Sankirtan. Hear the Nama regularly or go and sit in a place where Nama is being chanted.

 

To awaken us to the state of Truth, we need sounds which are above this worldly plane and are established in Reality.

 

Even if one is not able to Chant the Divine Name of Rama, one should hear others Chant of Divine Name Rama.

 

However, he concludes, 'only due to merits earned in crores of births does Bhagavan Năma come on our tongue.'

 

Of all the various people who are physically challenged, I get extremely moved when I come across people who are deaf and dumb. This is because they cannot hear or utter the Divine Names.

 

 Those people who take pleasure in continuously hearing, chanting and remembering Your activities, certainly very soon will see Your lotus feet, who put the recurrence of rebirths to an end.

 

Saintly persons (sadhus) hear, sing, and recite a literature, of such a writing describes the glory of the names of God.

 

If you think of one God , sing and hear his glories only , mingle with HIS devotees and do service only to him, your mind would attain one-pointedness

 

Why did he say that one should dance about on the streets (singing the glory of the Lord)?

 

Immediately that dumb boy gained divine knowledge and started dancing, singing the Divine Names, `Rama' and `Krishna'
