Excerpts from a discourse by our Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji on 17th November, 2002
In Tamizh there is a lyric that says, 'At the time of death all my relatives and friends will be around me. Even I may feel bound by all my relatives and worry over their welfare after my death. But, if I think of Tirumal at the time of death I will certainly attain Vaikunta (the abode of Lord Vishnu).' If we desire to do any good, any favour to the dying at home we should sit near him and chant,
"Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare!
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare!"
Even if the dying are unable to utter the Nãma their mind would be in it. The Name of the Lord would fall in their ears. Is that not so? The dying would hear the Name of the Lord and reach Tirumãl's Lotus Feet. Chanting the Name of the Lord is only highest 'upakãra' (help) 'nanmai' (good) that we can render to the dying. Hearing Rama Nãma (the Name Rama) bestows the highest position ('gati'). If our loved one is dying and we desire any good to him there is nothing better than uttering the Name of the Lord. Nothing else can do any good.
