In Bhagavat Bhakti if one labours sincerely then he will definitely receive the fruit. There is no doubt on this account.

Excerpts from a discourse by our Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji

 

Guru initiates you into a Mantra but who has to practise the japa? You, of course! If you have the yearning you will definitely do incessant japa of the Mantra given to you by the Guru. It is only the 'lakshiyavãdi' (one whose mind is set on the goal) who labours. When one studies in an engineering college he labours for four years to get his degree! Only then can he earn money. He then goes abroad. Likewise one studies to become a doctor.

 

But in Bhagavat vishaya we expect everything to be given to us on a silver platter! Do not expect to be fed. Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa used to say, "Do you expect me to skin the banana and push it down your throat?" You must exert effort. If you try you are sure to receive the Grace. In Bhagavat Bhakti if one labours sincerely then he will definitely receive the fruit. There is no doubt on this account. Mantra is like a fire. Guru throws it to you. 'Indanam' is the 'ãvarti' that you perform. As you do incessant japa of the Mantra it adds up to the fire and makes it a 'Tapo Agni' which leads you to Jnãna/Bhagavãn's Lotus Feet.

The time lost cannot be gained back. Death awaits you. If you say that you would do japa, dhyana after death in the 'loka' that you might attain - well! You cannot do japa or dhyana there

 

If you desire to have God with you always, do japa of His Naama always

 

Similarly, we make resolutions to do japa or dhyana many times but fail to keep it up. But, repeated resolutions and effort towards it will finally help us in doing it steadily.

The Năma Sankîrtanam performed by the Mahăns is not a spiritual practice (‘sădhana roopa’).

Is Năma Sankîrtanam performed for the attainment of Liberation alone?

 

The Năma Sankîrtanam performed by the Mahăns is not a spiritual practice ('sădhana roopa'). It does not mean that they are performing Năma Sankîrtanam to attain something; either Bhagavat darshan or Jnăna. Our Gurunatha, Bodendra Swami, did not stop chanting the 'Tăraka Mantră'(Rama Năma) throughout his life (alone) but even today He is in Samadhi (for the past 300 years), as 'Brahmi Bhoota'(as THAT which IS - Brahman), chanting the Tăraka Mantra. Is it then to attain Brahma Săkshătkăra that He is doing japa or for Rama darshan? No, it is for neither. It is neither for Brahma Săkshătkăra nor for Rama Darshan. The Năma is not different from Brahma Swaroopa. So, is being in Năma means being away from Brahmaswaroopa? No, it is not so. Since Bhagavăn, Bhagavăn Nămas (Names), Bhagavat swaroopa are not different entities from Brahman He is always steeped in it (doing japa of Bhagavăn Năma). So, what is the purpose ('tătparyam') of the Mahăns performing Kîrtanas?

 

In Kali, in Vedănta mărga only a handful of people can get liberated through Brahma vichăra. Or through Karmănushtăna a few might get liberated. Through Yoga 'abhyăsa'( practice) a few might get liberated. Therefore, the Mahăns give Upadesa of Năma to crores and crores of people and ask them to perform Năma Sankîrtanam. Are there not innumerable people who do not perform Năma Sankîrtanam? It is for their sake that the Mahăns perform Năma Sankîrtanam! What does the Guru Kîrtan say about Bodendra? One cannot get a Guru like Bodendra. Why? He does japa of Rama Năma and gives it as alms ('bhiksha') to all those who go to His Presence ('sannidhi'). He does not even ask you to do japa, instead, does it Himself and gives it to you as alms!

Gopis say, 'Vishwato bhayam' - the world is frightening. But, actually Bhagavãn is protecting them so well that they can say, 'Vishwato madhuram!' - the world is very sweet (appealing)!

 

If Bhagavãn has bestowed you with happiness and comfort, then begin to do japa and dhyãna from today. Do not participate in worldly pastimes because you are in happiness. Do not involve yourself in worldly pursuits. We do not need them. While so many are suffering in various ways has Bhagavãn not placed us in a very agreeable atmosphere? Why has the Lord bestowed us with a comfortable life? Not to spend our time in worldly pastimes and lose out on the purpose of life! We can make this 'sariira' (physical body) 'amrita mayam' (deathless); we can live a deathless life! Therefore, begin practice of the path from today.

We cannot recover the past. We are not sure of the future. It is only the present that is at our disposal. So don't waste it. Chant, chant, chant!

 

Why I cant postpone chanting?

 

Since it has to be attained some day why not begin it today?

Power of wealth, body, men and every such thing would leave you one day. Only one would remain with you. "Nănyam tatah padmapalăsalochanăd." The power ('balam') of Yoga, tapas, dhyana, Atma vichara, Jnana would leave you.

 

Only one 'balam' would remain. What is it? "K R U P A!" (Grace). That Narayana is the only saviour for all in the world.

Oh, my son! Time is passing by. You have lots of relatives and friends. You possess good health. You are intelligent and capable. You earn quite a lot and are leading a comfortable life. But have you not thought of the day that every one has to face?

 

Only that grace of the Guru would stand by you

 

Rama is the help of the helpless. Surdas says that when a man has exhausted all his resources and invokes the Name of God, His grace descends upon him.

 

When can one earn Guru krupa? When God decides to bless a person, he receives Guru's grace. One has to be blessed with Bhakti; and that is blessed only by God/Guru.

 

God's grace - we receive this by chanting and earnest prayers

 

While Krishna has taken care of all worldly necessities why should one seek another deity's help? Sri Krishna whom you worship will bless you with all round welfare.

 

While it is a general belief that God can be attained by a Guru's grace, what is more significant is that only if there is God's grace, can one attain a real Guru

 

That love, can sprout only by his grace. His grace descends when we chant the Mahamantra.

The moment the soul realises his supreme and divine nature by union with the Lord in his heart, he becomes the very lustrous moon emitting always soft and soothing rays of Divine love. The ego obstructs the free flow of the Divine love in the human being. So to earn the supreme blessings of this glorious love, a one-pointed devotion to and adoration of the Lord of the universe is the way, the means and also the goal.

The ultimate result of singing God's names is unconditional love towards one and all.

 

Mechanical chanting is the only starting point we can attempt. It matures to love by grace.

 

Mechanical chanting is the starting phase. It will soon graduate to mental chanting and soon this mental one-pointed chanting will lead to the source of the chant, which is the truth.

 

Thus it is spoken of in the scriptures regarding constant remembering as a means to liberation

Excerpts from a discourse by our Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji

 

Thousand years ago, in the Vaishnava Sampradãya, an Ãcharya Purusha named Ramanuja incarnated in the village of SriPerumpudur. Here is an anecdote from his life that depicts the immense compassion that he had.

 

Once, in order to receive upadesa of 'Thiruvashtãkshara'(8 lettered) mantra, he went to the Nambi living in Thirukottiyur from Kancheepuram (place where Ramanuja was staying). Though the Nambi heeded the request of Ramanuja, he did not give upadesa. On some pretext, he sent him off asking him to come another day. Ramanuja made seventeen such attempts and had to return every time without receiving upadesa. Still, he did not lose heart. He visited the Nambi for the eighteenth time and requested him to give upadesa.

 

Pleased by Ramanuja's absolute patience and real interest in receiving the Mantra upadesa, Thirukottiyur Nambi gave the upadesa at the right time. While giving the upadesa, Thirukottiyur Nambigal told Sri Ramanuja -"You must not give upadesa of this mantra to anybody. If you do, you will attain hell. If you incessantly do japa of Thiruvashtãkshara mantra, you will most certainly attain liberation without any hurdle. Later, Ramanuja took leave of Thirukottiyur Nambi after paying obeisance to him.

 

Ramanuja while coming out was in a state of ecstasy. He seemed relieved of all worries. But the purpose of his incarnation was not to attain the highest state and liberate himself! He was very sure about the fact that the mantra that he had received was capable of giving liberation. His intention was to give upadesa of this Thiruvashtãkshara mantra to everybody and help them attain liberation.

 

Soon after he received the mantra, Ramanuja climbed the top of the Gopura of the temple. He called all the people. Ramanuja's desire was fulfilled. His mind was filled with boundless enthusiasm. His very mission gave him strength. Due to these reasons, his voice became mellifluous, compulsively inviting and attractive. He called on to the mass several times. Then, Ramanuja , in a loud tone, with a magnanimous heart, immense compassion and love gave upadesa of Thiruvashtãkshara mantra to one and all. He requested everybody to chant the mantra always.

 

Hearing this, Thirukottiyur Nambi sent for Ramanuja and reproached him. He said-"You have ignored my advice! You are sure to attain hell." Unperturbed by these words and full of contentment, Ramanuja said-"There is no harm in it! I am prepared to go to hell if all these people can attain liberation." Thirukottiyur Nambi was overwhelmed on seeing the compassion that Ramanuja had. He blessed Ramanuja and sent him.

 

The life of great incarnations like Ramanuja inspires children like us to have an open mind and cultivate pure thinking.

I am not one to sit on your lap just because you have called me, and make merry. I will come only along with all (the others). - Why Prahlad is foremost among bhaktas ?

 

Selfless prayers for others are lyrics of the soul….. Bhagavan (my Father) is very fond of such prayers.

 

Selfless prayer is a penance by itself

 

Let a new India sans violence and selfishness but at the same time devoid of lethargy and cowardice be born. Let us all, with this in view, take the Name of the Lord and chant the Maha Mantra; make all chant the Maha Mantra. Fill India to the brim with Naamakirtan. Let Her offer to the world the spiritual bliss that she has found. Let us stand unique by combining any flawless modern way with the ancient one.

People say that Bhagavăn Krishna is Moksha (Liberation) bestowing Lord; therefore, for worldly comforts one should do japa of Mantras of other relevant deities. What do you have to say to this?"

Food is the first need of Man. When the Păndavas moved to the forest Bhagavăn Sri Krishna blessed them with the 'akshaya pătra', which never went empty of food. The next need is clothing to cover his body. When the Kauravas attempted to undress Draupadi, Lord Krishna provided her with yarns and yarns of cloth (and defeated the attempts of the Kauravas). The next necessity is a place to live. Sri Krishna got back their kingdom for the Păndavas. Next comes wealth. Lord Krishna blessed Kuchela with immense wealth. When Sage Durvăsa used 'durmantra' (evil Mantra) against Ambareesha who was ever immersed in the dhyăna of Sri Krishna, the Lord's Sudarsana Chakra protected him. 

The Bhăgavatam describes Sri Krishna who dances on the poisonous Kaliya as "Akhilakalădi Guru". He is verily the Guru of all Arts. He instructed Ătma Vidya - the greatest of all Vidya (knowledge) - to Arjuna. While Krishna has taken care of all worldly necessities why should one seek another deity's help? Sri Krishna whom you worship will bless you with all round welfare.
