I am pretty sure chanting the Name will definitely bring you good fortune

Once a devotee came to Sri Swamiji and complained that he was not at all doing well. He said that he did visit an astrologer and the astrologer suggested that if he changes his name, it will bring good fortune to him.  This gentleman wanted to confirm this with Sri Swamiji.

Sri Swamiji smiled and told him,

'I know not if changing the name will bring you good fortune, but

I am pretty sure chanting the Name will definitely bring you good fortune'

If only they had given even a small part of their time to japa or singing the Lord's praises sans any of these worldly goal, how easily would they have realized the Almighty?

The thirst from within

Whenever I see people perform rituals such as Homas and some special poojas to invoke the blessings of the Almighty or see Bhagavathas performing bhajans for longs hours, at times throughout the night, I wonder why they are not able to do the same Japa or chant the Lord's Name in solitude at their home, to attain the same goal [liberation]!

I asked myself, 'Is it their longing for tangible worldly benefits like money, attention, appreciation or a combination of these that motivates them? If only they had given even a small part of their time to japa or singing the Lord's praises sans any of these worldly goal, how easily would they have realized the Almighty?'

However, I immediately realized that one needs to have the motivation from within to 'Realize the Lord' . And, this motivation is possible if and only if they have the "GRACE OF A TRUE GURU".

This indeed is the path to Moksha!

God knows us better than anyone else, cares about us more than we do ourselves and is waiting eagerly for us to call Him.

The Power of the Name

Let us assume that a person named Gopal is walking on the street. You are in your house and call out 'Gopal' to summon your own brother named Gopal who lives with you. This Gopal (stranger on the road) responds to your call though he does not know you at all, does not care about you or is not expecting to be called by you at all. Such is the power of the 'Name'!

When this is the case, God knows us better than anyone else, cares about us more than we do ourselves and is waiting eagerly for us to call Him.

So if we throw our hands up in the air, call out His Divine Name with faith and surrender, will He not rush to us in a flash... So the easiest way to reach God is to call out His Divine Name - the Holy 'Hare Rama' Mahamantra.

To awaken us to the state of Truth, we need sounds which are above this worldly plane and are established in Reality. These sounds or ‘Shabdas’ (divine sounds) are mantras like the Mahamantra.

Awakening Sounds

We all dream while we sleep. Suppose, we hear a loud noise like that of a jar falling to the ground in the dream, it does not awaken us from our slumber. Instead, we only continue with our dream. But, if the same thing happens really, in the room in which we are asleep, we are up on our bed with a jerk, is it not?" asked Sri Swamiji.

He then continued…

"So too, in this life of ours, which is only a dream, mundane or common sounds that we hear in our day-to-day life fail to awaken us to Reality, which is the ultimate Truth. To awaken us to this state of Truth, we need sounds which are above this worldly plane and are established in Reality. These sounds or 'Shabdas' (divine sounds) are mantras like the Mahamantra. So, when chanted incessantly, they destroy our sleep called ignorance, thereby causing the dream called world to vanish and awaken us to the state of Reality!'

When a disciple leads his life with the clear understanding that it is the Guru who is running his life - adverse or otherwise, completely emptying the mind of personal likes and dislikes, seeing everything as Guru's leela, attains realization

Nama Article 3rd June 2010

On Guru Poornima this year (2009), the devotee went to Ashram to meet Sri Swamiji. He was wanting to ask Sri Swamiji's message for Guru Poornima for the benefit of devotees all around the world.

When the devotee sat beside Sri Swamiji, His Holiness started a beautiful conversation, which reminds one of the spiritual conversations of the yore which reveals the supreme truth.

'What is the way to realization?' asked Sri Swamiji to the devotee.

The devotee was taken aback. He understood that the message was coming only in a very different way!

'Vina mahat pada rajobhisekam. Swamiji, only by reaching the feet of the guru can one get gnana (wisdom)'

'What does reaching the feet of the guru actually mean?' Sri Swamiji was certainly in a questioning mode!

'Reaching guru's feet means.. Well... Going to his abode and prostrating to him...' The devotee answered with hesitation

'That is true. Physically prostrating to a guru and being in his physical presence is good. That is a different story... But is it all?'

The devotee could not answer any further....

Sri Swamiji continued...

"When a disciple sheds all the adverse modes of the mind like kama (desire), krodha (anger) etc. and completely leads his life with the clear understanding that it is the Guru who is running his life - adverse or otherwise, completely emptying the mind of personal likes and dislikes, seeing everything as Guru's leela, in due course of time, disciple's mind will be completely synchronized with the mind of the Guru.

When that happens, then disciple's mind becomes submerged with the Guru's mind, which is pure brahman (God). This is how a disciple attains liberation by attaining the feet of a Guru."

Only Nama Sankirtan can be propagated

Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji

Dhyana Yoga, Karma Yoga and Jnana - All these paths need to be taught, but only Nama Sankirtan can be propagated. That verily shows its simplicity.
