If you desire to have God with you always, do japa of His Name always

Nama Article 8th March 2010

Excerpts from a discourse by our Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji

'If you are in crisis and chant this name ('Yogiramsuratkumar'), then God will come to your help,' says Yogi. What will happen if you chant this Mantra always? God will always be with you!

This applies to all Mantras. What does Aazhwaar say, call out for God while in trouble. Aazhwaar says, 'Chant the Naama 'Naaraayana' while in trouble and while not in trouble!' The reason for this is that 'Naama' (Name) and 'Naami' (one who bears the Name) are not different from each other. If you desire to have God with you always, do japa of His Naama always. Do you understand? This (Naama japa) is the easiest way for the destruction of the mind ('mano naasa').

Pasuram

Like a potent medicine that not only eradicates the crippling illness but also ensures a disease-free life, this mantra too rids us of troubles when they plague us and reserves for us an existence of unalloyed bliss. Even if one doesn't require anything from life and is perfectly satisfied, with what it has to offer, this mantra can be recited for the pure pleasure it offers and for its own sake.

The true purpose of our existence is to realize God in ourselves. No other purpose is equal to or more significant than this

Excerpts from a discourse by our Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji

From the smallest of creations to the highest, each creature in this Universe seems to have its own purpose. On the same lines, it might seem that, as men and women, we have a different purpose in life too. But it is important to understand what the true purpose is.

The true purpose of our existence is to realize God in ourselves. No other purpose is equal to or more significant than this.

It is only by the path of love, that God may be approached

Haripath - Sant Gnyaneshwar

Meaning

Bathing in sacred rivers, observing austerities and conducting rituals fail to grant desired results, if done without belief. They end-up as mere physical exertions. These pursuits are like the effort of collecting mercury drops spilled on the ground. Why to resort to these type of troubles when you have Hari like a berry in your palm. My guru Sri Nivruththideva handed down the complete method of reaching the Almighty to me. It is only by the path of love, that God may be approached; There is no other way.

Logic had made my heart as hard as iron. I had no devotion. Thou hast melted me. Salutations unto thee, O powerful Lord!

Swami Papa Ramdas

Japa and Smaran must go together. Japa makes the mind steady and prepares it for Dhyana. Through Dhyana we reach the state of Samadhi where we realise our identity with God. In Samadhi, the mind is perfectly still, without any Samkalpas or Vikalpas without any desires, or ideas. We realise that we are not the physical body, the senses, the mind or the intellect, but that we are the immortal, absolute Truth itself. Having gained this experience, we advance to the state of Parabhakti about which Ramdas has talked to you often.

Source: Lord Gauranga (Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu) By Sri Swami Sivananda

Sarvabhauma expounded the following verse in nine different ways. Chaitanya showed his skill in Sanskrit and expounded the same verse in sixty-one different ways. Sarvabhauma was struck with wonder. The verse runs:

"Atmaramascha Munayo Nigranthapi Urukrame,

Kurvanty Ahaitukim Bhaktim Ithambhuta Guno Hari"

"Hari's qualities are so charming that the Atmarama Yogis--though they are Nigranthas (i.e., outside the influence of illusion or Shastraic injunctions)--become contemplative and are attracted by the same into adoring the Urukrama Hari with selfless love and devotion."

Gauranga was a great scholar and yet he was humble. He would never indulge in such talks as were calculated to wound the feelings of others. He would never feel a sense of elation if he got victory in his debates. Gauranga eventually converted Sarvabhauma to his faith and criticised his arguments one by one. Gauranga embraced Sarvabhauma. Sarvabhauma fainted in an ecstasy of divine joy. He then rose and danced. He prostrated at the feet of Gauranga and said, "Oh venerable Master! Logic had made my heart as hard as iron. I had no devotion. Thou hast melted me. Salutations unto thee, O powerful Lord!".

Japa makes the mind steady and prepares it for Dhyana. Through Dhyana we reach the state of Samadhi where we realise our identity with God. Then we advance to the state of Parabhakti

Nama Article 4th March 2010

Swami Papa Ramdas

Ramdas will tell you something about Japa and Smaran. Japa is the repetition of the Name of God, either with a Mala for counting the number of repetitions or without it. Smaran is keeping the thought of God in our mind. When we think of milk, all its qualities, like whiteness, fluidity and sweetness, flash into our mind. So also when we think of God, our mind must automatically dwell on the attributes of God-Sat-Chit-Ananda. This is called Smaran.

Japa and Smaran are not considered to be two separate things. They must go on simultaneously. They do not go together in the early stages of the Sadhana. So when we do Japa, we must make our mind one-pointed, either by concentrating on the sound of the Name, or on any form of God, within or without. This is called Dhyana. Dhyana can be on the Saguna or Nirguna aspect of God. To reach the Nirguna aspect straightaway in the beginning is very hard! Saguna Dhyana is keeping the thought of any particular form of God in our mind. It may be the form of our Guru, or of our Ishta whom we worship. By constant practice we should make the form steady in our mind. We must bear in mind that the form stands for God, Who is the all-pervading and all-comprehensive Truth. So also, when we chant the Name, we must feel that the Name is of God, the Atman, the Infinite. By meditating on the form of God, and chanting His Name, we can gradually go beyond all names and forms and ultimately reach the Nirguna aspect. Then we realise that God is not only in one place, confined to one form, but that He is all-pervading and that by His power alone all the worlds are moving.

Namakirtan does not depend on considerations of space

Nama Article 2nd March 2010

Namadwaar [A prayer house powered by the Divine Name] was inaugurated with the blessings of Sri Sri Muralidharaswamiji, the 28th of February 2010.

हिंसादि-पुरुषान्तर-द्रव्यान्तर-देशकालादि-नियमानपेक्षत्वं आधिक्ये कारणम् ।

The six reasons for the superiority of Namakirtan way for the salvation are as under:

(i) Ahimsa way of worship (Ahimsa - non-injury means entire abstinence from causing any pain or harm whatsoever) and can be practiced by all i.e. person belonging to any caste, religion or varnas

(ii) Does not depend on ancillary aids or spending (draviya apeksha).

(iii) Does not call for intercession of other persons (Purushantra Apeksha).

(iv) Does not depend on considerations of space (Desa Apeksha).

(v) Does not depend on considerations of time (Niyama Apeksha)

(vi) It is free from constraints of procedures and rituals (Prakara Niyama Apeksha).
