We usually remember God when we go through tough times in our lives. Isn't this like 'latching' on to God to escape the reality of the situation? Were God and His forms created (or invented) to help people in distressed situations? Is there really a Krishna or a Vishnu? If so, how are they different from the ultimate truth?

 

Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji:

 

God is 'what is'. We can't 'latch' on to God to escape 'what is'! God and his forms were certainly not created for convenience! Whatever is real is Krishna! Are you for real? The real 'reality' in you is Krishna.

 

Like light is both a particle and a wave and exhibits its property depending on the context! Krishna is with a beautiful form and beyond form in the same token.

 

This is not what intellect is trained to see. So it refuses to accept. Krishna is indeed beyond our little intellect. Krishna can be realized only by pure love.

 

That love, can sprout only by his grace. His grace descends when we chant the Mahamantra. Mechanical chanting is the only starting point we can attempt. It matures to love by grace.

Let the mind wander as it likes. Name is necessary to concentrate the mind. What is the use of breaking a trained horse? But one has to adopt various stratagems to bring an untrained horse under control. The object of worship is just to bring the mind under control.

 

When one starts taking the Name, the mind like a horse tries to wander about. Pay no attention to it but cling tighter to the Name of the Lord.

 

You will find that your mind and speech would have come under your control within a short time.

How does mere chanting of Mahamantra lead one to the ultimate truth? If we are chanting it mechanically most of the time, how can one realize the self? To chant means to have a mind and a memory. So, does this not contradict the fact that Mahatmas have no minds?

 

Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji:

 

Mahatmas talk! Don't they? Does it disqualify them as mahatmas, because as per your idea, talking can happen only when there is mind and memory, so if they talk they cease to be Mahatmas! If a Mahatma's teaching made you think so, he has talked too! So, if that would disqualify him as a Mahatma, there is no need to read his teachings further! So something is wrong in the assumption? Is it not?

 

The ego, the mind has to be made silent. Chanting works on ego and dissolves it into its source.Mechanical chanting is the starting phase. It will soon graduate to mental chanting and soon this mental one-pointed chanting will lead to the source of the chant, which is the truth. So just like mere mechanical reading of books, soon starts working as understanding or 'doubt' in the mental level, chanting mechanically also leads to mental absorption.

 

Many saints have realized with the help of God's grace just by chanting Mahamantra. There are infinite paths to infinite bliss. Truth is pathless. Infinity and zero are but two ways of telling this fact. In geometry, a theoretical question of how many sides does a perfect circle have, has two answers to depict the same truth - zero and infinity!

 

Understand that great sages like JK, Ramana Maharshi, Yogi Ramsuratkumar all have realized that one truth and are only speaking in different tones. Yogi Ramsuratkumar Maharaj says chanting is sufficient to realize. Easier way for normal people is to chant, even if it appears mechanical to start with.

I feel, mind is like a monkey which wavers, making concentration difficult during prayers or chanting. How do I overcome this?

 

Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji:

 

The elephant cannot keep its trunk stationary. It keeps swaying it always. In order to arrest its movement, the mahout gives it a huge chain to hold on to. Similarly, in order for the mind to concentrate, we have it focus on the divine Name and Form of the Lord. That is the basic principle of idol worship.

 

Instead of going for a multitude of Names and Forms, it is advisable to stick to one deity and chant one Mantra incessantly. This will bring concentration and one-pointedness. One can thus achieve eternal bliss by merely chanting the Maha Mantra.

Unmindful of this, go on taking the Lord's Name. Taking His Name or woshipping Him is not included in the ordained list of Karma for man; this is the loosening screw and the only way to get rid of the ordained lot.

I sincerely chant the Mahamantra daily for the past 6 months. Kindly tell me which are the Dasakams in Narayaneeyam to be recited which will remove the lustful thoughts, arrogance and worries?

We see that, prior to exams, some students have a number of books open in front of them and read a paragraph from one book and switch to another in quick succession. Eventually, then draw a blank when it comes to results because they have not studied any particular subject in enough depth.

 

This is true in spirituality too. We undertake a variety of different spiritual practices, chant a series of Mantras, perform a lengthy list of rites and rituals. And we do all of them for namesake – with little faith and sincerity.

 

In my opinion, it is the intensity and sincerity with which you perform the spiritual practice that is more significant, than what practice you undertake.

 

Mahamantra Kirtan has been prescribed as a simple and straightforward means of achieving everything. So why not take to that alone and do it in an intense manner with complete faith, instead of confusing yourself with a multitude of practices?
