One who utters My Name becomes holy very soon

Nama Article - 5th September 2007

क्षिप्रं भवति धर्मात्मा शश्वच्छान्तिं निगच्छति |

कौन्तेय प्रतिजानीहि न मे भक्तः प्रणश्यति ||

                                    (Srimad Bhagavadgita 9:31)

Speedily he becomes virtuos and secures lasting peace, O Kaunteya, and take a vow, that My devotee is never destroyed.

Excerpts from a discourse by our Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji

Lord Krishna says, 'Kshipram bhavati dharmãtma' (One who utters My Name becomes holy very soon). As the person repeatedly chants the Nãma, the very thought to commit a sin is destroyed. THIS IS THE GREAT PRABHAAVA (GLORY) OF NAAMA SANKIRTAN. That is why Mahãtmas have attained the great state.

Nothing is beyond the reach of Nãma Sankirtan. Everything can be attained through Nãma Sankirtan. One should only possess an one-pointed mind - 'nishta'.

The root of satyagraha is in prayer……… Satyagraha teaches us the art of living as well as dying

Nama Article - 3rd September 2007

Excerpts form the SPEECH AT PRAYER MEETING, BOMBAY March 14, 1946

The root of satyagraha is in prayer……… Satyagraha teaches us the art of living as well as dying.

The singing of Ramdhun is the most important part of congregational prayer. The  millions may find it difficult to correctly recite and understand the Gita verses and the Arabic and Zend-Avesta prayers, but everybody can join in chanting Ramanama or God's name. It is as simple as it is effective. Only it must proceed from the heart. In its simplicity lies its greatness and the secret of its universality. Anything that millions can do together becomes charged with a unique power.

Gandhiji said that my prayer, will-power and mental concentration were developed. This lesson he had learnt during his experience over many years, from the time he first started satyagraha.

I introduced the practice of having congregational prayer some time before the commencement of the South African satyagraha struggle.

IAs a practising satyagrahi and the author of satyagrahas, he could say that its seed lay in prayers. Satyagraha could be pitted against all earthly powers for it was a divine power.

The root of satyagraha is in prayer. A satyagrahi relies upon God for protection against the tyranny of brute force. Why should you then be always afraid of the British or anybody playing you false? If someone deceives you, he will be the loser. The fight of satyagraha is for the strong in spirit, not the doubter or the timid. Satyagraha teaches us the art of living as well as dying. Birth and death are inevitable among mortals.

The art of dying follows as a corollary from the art of living.

Death must come to all. A man may die of a lightning stroke or as aresult of a heart failure or failure of respiration. But that is not the death that a satygarahi can wish for or pray for himself. The art of dying for a satyagrahi consists in facing death cheerfully in the performance of one's duty.

The beauty and power of the Divine Name is that it completely takes over.........

Nama Article - 2nd September 2007

We have heard of great Mahans chanting the Rama Nama or the Krishna Nama towards attaining God-Realization. Are there other Mahans besides Chaitanya Mahaprabhu who have chanted the Maha Mantra to attain the Lord? Moreover I have read that a Sadhak should stick to one name and form. The Mahamantra has both Rama and Krishna's names. So to avoid the mind from wavering can I contemplate on my Guru while chanting the Maha Mantra?

Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji:

The beauty and power of the Divine Name is that it completely takes over. All you need to do is chant. when you chant do not bother whether your mind wavers or not. Nama will take care of that.

Though there maybe so many names and mantras, this mantra is specifically prescribed by the Upanishad for this age (Kali Santarana Upanishad). Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Swami Sivananda, Swami Abhedananda, numerous sadhus in Vrindavan, advocate this mantra as the simplest solution in this Yuga.

Bhagavan Ramana used to say that the doubt whether one would be able to attain liberation is the greatest hurdle and nothing else. Faith is the bedrock of anything in this world. For certain questions, any amount of intellectual analysis will not help find a decisive answer and they will always remain. The secret is to hold on to a path advocated by the Guru and proceed doubtlessly with faith in the words of the Guru and the experience the bliss Yourself.

Signs of God-vision

Signs of God-vision

"The sign of a man's having realized God is that he has become like a dry coconut. He has become utterly free from the consciousness that he is the body. He does not feel happy or unhappy with the happiness or unhappiness of the body. He does not seek the comforts of the body. He roams about in the world as a jivanmukta, one liberated in life. 'The devotee of Kali is a jivanmukta , full of Eternal Bliss.'

"When you find that the very mention of God's name brings tears to your eyes and makes your hair stand on end, then you will know that you have freed yourself from attachment to 'woman and gold' and attained God. If the matches are dry, you get a spark by striking only one of them. But if they are damp, you don't get a spark even if you strike fifty. You only waste matches. Similarly, if your mind is soaked in the pleasure of worldly things, in 'woman and gold', then God-Consciousness will not be kindled in you. You may try a thousand times, but all your efforts will be futile. But no sooner does attachment to worldly pleasure dry up than the spark of God flashes forth."

One is sure to find progress in the field in which he possesses deep interest

Nama Article - 30th August 2007

Once, some Sadhaks on their way to a prayer meeting passed a busy market place. The market street was very crowded and was, herefore, very noisy.

As they walked one of the Sadhaks said, "The Namakirtan in the prayer meeting has begun!" Amazed to hear this another Sadhak asked him, "How do you say that the bhajan has begun in the prayer meeting? We are yet to reach the place which is still a long way off."

Not to be put off, the first Sadhak held on to his words, "I can hear it. The Namakirtan has begun. Let us hurry up."

The other Sadhak said in an accusing tone, "You are merely bluffing. Certainly your words cannot be true as the place of the prayer meeting is still far off. We are in a noisy market place where one is unable to hear the man beside him. How then can you hear the Namakirtan going on at the prayer meeting? Not only are your words a mere bluff but they also sound funny. How is it that you are able to hear the bhajan whence we who are by your side are unable to hear it?

However, the first Sadhak said, "My words are true. I can hear the sound of the Namakirtan very clearly. The sweet sound of the Namakirtan is flowing into my ears in spite of the crowd and noise in the market place. Can you understand the reason behind it? My whole concentration is in the Namakirtan at the prayer meeting while your minds are not in it. A mother can hear her child's cry clearly even in a noisy crowd as her child occupies her mind wholly! Our mind is totally set in the subject matter of our interest. My interest lay in Namakirtan and I am quite anxious to reach the place before the Namakirtan begins. My earnestness to take part in the Namakirtan right from the start is the reason behind the sound of the Kirtan heard by me. As you all do not possess such earnestness you have not heard the sound of the Kirtan."

However, the others did not accept his explanation. They said to him, "You think very low of us. You feel that we have no interest in Namakirtan. But we are as much interested in Namakirtan as you are. Your claim that you can hear the sound of Namakirtan is sheer bluff."

The first Sadhak challenged, "Well! Shall I prove my words to you all right now? Shall I draw the attention of the entire noisy crowd towards me?"

The rest accepted it though with doubt. "It is an impossible task. But you may try it."

Generally, the world runs behind money and material! The first Sadhak moved over to a place where the sound of jingling of coins could be heard by the crowd and threw down a handful of coins to the ground. At once the attention of the whole crowd in the busy, noisy market place was drawn to it as everyone has desire for money. As the mind is always searching a way for earning money its attention was at once drawn to the sound of the coins. All the other Sadhaks now accepted the argument of the first Sadhak.

This illustrates that one is sure to find progress in the field in which he possesses deep interest.
