The best way to help a person attain salvation on his death bed is to Chant the Mahamantra loudly in his ears.

Hereafter, the Divine Name Rama is my only companion, nothing else.

Nothing we earn today would come with us to the final destination but only the Divine Name WILL

Lord Rama says, "Any accumulated wealth will dissolve in due time. Any position of power attained will come to an end. All the relations (children, wife) come to an end in death. There is nothing in this world that is permanent."

Death shows, never, any compassion, Be mindful and only chant this simple prayer, Hare Rama

The God of Death has no compassion. One must always Chant the Divine name of the Lord Hari.

Who can be so compassionate? They (Mahans) come away leaving their wives, children and parents. They neither think of them nor do they worry about them. But, they take those who seek them as their family. They bear the burden of the families of their devotees. They worry over their problems and are concerned only about their welfare. They feel, 'it is not enough if I bless my devotee but should bless all those who help my devotee!' In Mahabharata, how did Krishna view each and every one? Any friend of Arjuna was his friend. Any enemy of Arjuna was his enemy. The deep love ('anbu'/'premai') that Krishna had for Arjuna was the reason behind this. It is this sort of love that Mahans have shown to all those who have sought them.

When these Mahans mingle with the devotees without any bias of Nationality, State, Caste, Religion or Language then we find that those who seek them, those who come to them also forget all about the country, the state, the caste, the language they belong. Therefore, real tolerance, real national integration and compassion can come about only through such Mahans who have attained Oneness with God.

The charitra of such Mahans are the proof for achieving national integration, tolerance and compassion. Moreover, from the lives of several Mahans we are able to understand their deep compassion. In these we find that they have gone beyond religion, caste, nationality, language, state and looking at Man only as Man, have blessed the people with the requisite 'arul' (Grace). Therefore, in the world when each and everyone attains such high state of spirituality there is no doubt whatsoever that National Integration, Compassion and Tolerance towards other faiths will come about.

Excerpts from a discourse by our Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji

There once lived a devotee by name Poondãnam. He used to read the Bhãgavatam daily. The Bhãgavatam contains details of the Vaikunta. One day while reading this he deeply earned to see Vaikunta. 'Oh, Vaikunta is said to very beautiful. Wouldn't the Lord show me this beautiful Vaikunta?' As soon as the Bhakta yearned to see the Vaikunta, Bhagavan decided to fulfill his desire. Poondanam went into a trance and saw Vaikunta. There, in Vaikunta two beautiful looking persons prostrated to him. He wondered, 'I am new to Vaikunta but here some are prostrating to me?'

He asked them, "Who are you?"

The two replied, "Swami! It is through you that we have attained Vaikunta!"

Poondanam, "What? Have I helped you attain Vaikunta? I have come here only now. Please explain."

They explained, "You read the Bhagavatam daily. We are the two plantain trees in front of your home. (The sound of the Bhagavatam fell on us. And, we have attained this state!)"

Poondanam came out of the Samãdhi state and found the two plantain trees fallen down!

Bhãgavatam has the capability to bestow the high state to the sentient and insentient things! The Lord's Divine Name can purify everything. Due to Lord's grace one attains to a Sadguru and he begins to utter Bhagavan Nãma (Divine Name of the Lord) with 'prema' (love)!

Once when Sage Narada Maharishi was in Dwaraka, Bhagavan Sri Krishna's father - Vasudeva enquired about Bhagavata Dharma. When this question was put, Sage Narada Maharshi felt waves of bliss and spake thus:

'tvayA parama-kalyANah puNya-sravana kIrtanah; smArito bhagavAn adya devo nArAyaNo mama (Srimad Bhagavatam 11.2.13).

Dear Vasudeva! You have asked such a wonderful question which brought the Bhagavan Narayana to my mind! To answer your question, I shall be speaking out about the glories of Sri Vaasudeva! When one talks or sings of the glories of Sri Vasudeva it brings in immediate bliss and purity!

Sage Narada is in constant remembrance of Bhagavan. Many Mahaans like Sage Narada are in this state of constant memory of Bhagavan. But when they open their lotus lips to pour Bhagavat guna, they experience bliss of the highest order.

In our kitchen where we make prasadam for our Lord, we have a tap. The water connection always ensures that tap is filled with water. But unless the tap is opened, the people outside cannot see the water gushing out. Nor can they purify themselves with the water which flows out. Only when the tap is opened, they can feel the coolness of water, understand what was stored up in the tap for this long, and also get purified by the flow of the water.

Likewise, When a Mahatma is immersed in the divine thoughts of the Lord, others cannot even guess what is running inside this great soul. Only when he opens out to share his blissful experience can other get immensely benefited in form of bliss and purification!

When the listener is truly eager and sincere the bliss of sharing this by Mahaan becomes multi-fold, even more than just silent remembrance. When this blissful experience takes an expression of words, it enhances the bliss and also makes the deeper experience known to outer world.

Between two contemporary Mahatmas who were established in the same experience, we find one is more well known recognized and celebrated than the other, for one major reason. The one who is well known, spoke his experience out to others which was duly documented for generations to come while the other did not.

Thinking about the glories of Bhagavan is blissful; Speaking it out is spreads more bliss indeed!

Divine Name Rama is the real wealth in this world for all because it is the treasure which will not be reduces by spending and which no one can loot. This wealth will always be with us at all times and will increase multifold day by day and one need not spend to earn this wealth. Surdas always relishes by Chanting this Divine name and does not wish for anything else.

Those who Chant the Divine Names of Hari, Udupi Krishna blesses them with adequate food.

In this Kali the Mahătmas come only to propagate the dharma of Năma Sankirtan. Since the whole of Thiruppăvai speaks of the glory of Năma Sankirtan, in every song it mentions Năma Sankirtan -

'Pangayak kannănaip pădelo rembăvăi' (sing the Lotus eyed one)

'Avanai pădavum' (to sing His praises),

'Paramanadi pădi' (sing the praises of the Lord's Lotus Feet),

'Uttaman perpădi' (sing the Names of the Truthful One),

'Văyinăl pădi' (sing His praises),

'Kesavanai pădavum' (Sing the praises of Kesava),

'Pădip paraikondu' (Sing His praises). This is because only 'Kirtan' attracts Bhagavăn.

Chanting lips make many hands work

Having compassion of the Lord as the foundation, the one which has no rules, the one which can eradicate the force of Kali, Namakirtanam is the only resort.

You have wished for 'Dharma', 'Artha' (wealth), 'Kama' (ambitions) and 'Moksha' (God). All these four can be attained by performing service to Lord Sri Hari.

I am not able to find any way other than the repeated chanting of the Divine Names to gain the purushartas of dharma, artha, kama and moksha in this age of Kali

Narada says to Dhruva, "The way shown by your mother is the one leading to your highest good.

Yogiramsuratkumar always chanted the Ram Nam. By sheer power of Rama Nama, he cured innumerable diseases, blessed so many devotees with money, power wealth etc who came to him with mundane, worldly problems.

Jesus says, "Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? 'Father, save me from this hour'? But for this purpose I have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name."

He lives for the purpose of glorifying his heavenly Father, and every act he takes, whatever the cost, must be the one that most glorifies his heavenly Father. So his prayer must be, "Father, glorify your name."

It is important that we see this struggle so that we can know that Jesus faced every kind of temptation that we face, and that he made choices to obey that were hard and painful for him.

Jesus had prayed, "Father glorify your name": Then a voice came from heaven: "I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again." The crowd that stood there and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, "An angel has spoken to him."

More than glorifying the Guru or live with the Guru serving him just as Lakshmana did living alongside Rama we should, just as Bharata who held Rama's words in great respect and ruled the Kingdom, take all effort to fulfill our Guru's 'lakshya' (aim) and desire. This is what I truly desire.

Even while involved in service in this way we should keep doing japa without giving it up. It was in this manner that Hanuman worked tirelessly for Rama. He also performed incessant Rama japa. We should also be like this.

Only the Vedas are the 'pramãna' (proof) for the existence of God. The Vedas are the 'Eternal law' that show the right path to a man who desires to reach God. Therefore, only by following the path shown by the Vedas can one have 'darshan' (see) of God. If by any chance the Vedas die, then there would be no base to demark the right from the wrong. Several 'durmathas' (wrong faiths) would spring up and only confusion will prevail. Namasankirtan is also a way advocated by the Vedas. Hence we follow this path."

But all I know is that 'Năma sankirtanam' (singing Lord's names) is the correct path for all.

They might hesitate and ask, 'Can I, who have committed innumerable grievous sins, utter the pure Name of the Lord?' Such people need not hesitate or feel shy on this ground; they CAN sing the Divine Name of the Lord boldly and cheerfully!"

When its recitation commences with the Divine Name Hari and concludes with the same, it is a clear and significant indication that the essence of all Vedas is about chanting the Divine Name of Hari.

Every Ekadasi Akanda Namakirtan (Chanting Mahamantra from 6 am to 6 pm is done in most of our Namadwaars)

On auspicious days like Ekadasi people go on the streets singing the Divine Name of the Lord.

Every day in Marghazhi month and on Sundays people go on the streets singing the Divine Name of the Lord in all Namadwaars and GOD Satsangs

Every Saturday and on every Ekadasi people would get together in this Bhajan mutt/hall and do Bhajan [Nama Sankirtan], i.e. sing the Divine Names of the Lord.

Every week people in hundreds of GOD satsangs across the globe join and sing the Divine Names of the Lord

Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every Word that proceeds out of the mouth of God

"There is something called 'rasa kulligai'. What will one who holds this 'rasa kulligai' in his hand do? This 'rasa kulligai' possesses the power of turning any object into gold by its very touch.

Similarly, anyone who holds on to Bhagavãn has no auspicious or inauspicious time. They are not bound by any hard and fast rule regarding the period to perform or abstain from carrying out a work. This is because Bhagavãn is their protector.

What is the greatness of Bhakti? One who practices Yoga attains 'siddhis' , one who practices Vedanta enquiry attains 'siddhis', one who practices 'Karmanushtãnas' attains 'siddhis' but the one who is full of devotion does not attain any kind of 'siddhi'. Bhagavãn feels that one who is devoted to Him needs no 'siddhi'. That is because He is the protector ('Rakshaka').

What is there in this world that devotion to the Lord cannot do?

Man feels that only the most difficult is the highest, the most difficult way is the best way. This is a very wrong notion

That love, can sprout only by his grace. His grace descends when we chant the Mahamantra.

When can one earn Guru krupa? When God decides to bless a person, he receives Guru's grace. One has to be blessed with Bhakti; and that is blessed only by God/Guru.

Reciting the Divine Names of Lord Hari, one can overcome the most formidable delusion of mind.

There are many ways. But the simplest and the easiest way is by chanting the "Hare Rama.." Mahamantra.

They are for those who don't believe in simple prayers.

Bhagawan Nama Bodendra Saraswati Swamigal puts forth his findings in the following words, "Since it is so easy and simple, none takes to it!

Would it not amount to grave injustice if one shows a difficult path to the world?

Becomes the king of devotees.

(This sloka refers to the devotion shown by Kannappa a hunter devotee of Lord Shiva. In the forest he used to bring water in his mouth to bathe the idol and offer to the lord the meat pieces which he found were tasty.)

In the Gita, Bhagavãn says, "Amongst the months I AM Mãrgazhi." - 'Mãsãnam Mãrgasheershoham' Mãrgazhi month is said to be an inauspicious one ('peedai mãsam'). Marriages and other auspicious functions are not conducted in this month. When Bhagavãn spells out that amongst the month He is Mãrgazhi, why is this month considered inauspicious? In fact, this should be a revered/most favourable month. One should be able to conduct marriages, house warming ceremony or any other auspicious function in this month. But I pondered over, "why have the Mahãns termed this month as inauspicious?" And the conclusion that I drew is that if performance of marriages or any other auspicious function were permitted in this month then our minds would continue to be drowned only in such worldly affairs! At least, this one-month let the people worship the Lord! Is this not the period to worship Bhagavãn? This is the time to worship. Is it not?

Early morning perform 'Thiruãrãdhana' for Bhagavãn, perform Nãma Sankirtana, meditate ('dhyãna'). Since this one-month (the thirty days) is early morning ('prãtha kãla') for the Devas, people should be made to involve themselves only in spiritual matters. Hence, they have been forbidden us from conducting such worldly functions! This is the reason for labeling this month as inauspicious!

The one performing Upavasa should wake up before sunrise. He should take bath early in the morning chanting the Name of Hari.

Practise to sing God's name in the early morning hours in the form of Nama Kirtan.

In the early morning I Chant the Divine Names and worship Him who is beyond the reach of thought and speech and yet by whose grace all speech is possible

In the early morning he would get up and pace in his room and chant the names of gods and goddesses. At that time he would use his yogic vision to observe the spiritual progress of his disciples

Excerpts from a discourse by our Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji

One cannot do Bhakti by his own endeavor; Bhakti is earned only by virtue of Guru 'krupa' (grace) or Bhagavan's 'krupa'. Bhakti has to be born (out of Bhagavan's or Guru's grace). It cannot be developed through our own effort. Bhakti is not born in that manner.

If a man is asked to clap his hands, he can clap his hands; if he is asked to stand up he can; if he is asked to sit, he can sit. But, if he were asked to do Bhakti how would he do it? Bhakti is not something that is to be 'done' but it has to be born (from within). Bhakti should be born. How will that Bhakti be born? Through Guru's grace!

Well! When can one earn Guru krupa? When God decides to bless a person, he receives Guru's grace. One has to be blessed with Bhakti; and that is blessed only by God/Guru.

One can perform tapas. One can go without food for 10 days. One can go without sleep; one who has mental strength ('mano bala') can go without sleep or food. There are many who clap their hands for seventy days to have their names entered in the Guinness Book of World Record. There are some who keep standing the whole day. Do not people try all such gimmicks just to have their names entered in the Guinness Book? In the same manner tapas is easy to do. But, earning Bhakti is rare.

Only one who cannot do Bhakti should go to Vedanta and we do not accept/appreciate the statement that Bhakti is for those who are unable to do Vedanta vichara.

Bhagavăn says, "It is I who has given the Vedas, the Shastras. Lead your life accordingly." But Bhagavăn is not ready to give up those 'jivas' who are unable to lead their lives on the lines of dharmic principles.

Bhagavăn, therefore, sends Mahătmas to the world who tell the jivas - 'At least utter the Lord's Nămas and get ashore'.

Here, the Mahătma is the mother. "You need not listen to your father's words but at least avoid wicked ways ('durăcchăra'). Even if you have no good habit ('sadăcchăra') do not take to wicked ways. Chant the Name of the Lord", says the mother. If the son refuses to do even this, he is not given up, but is sent elsewhere, provided with the necessities of life and is brought back at the appropriate time. He will definitely transform one day.

'Veda mudalvanai pãdi veedhigal thorum thullãdãr'

(singing the glory of the One who appears foremost in the Vedas and dance about the streets)

Why did he say that one should dance about on the streets (singing the glory of the Lord)?

Well! When you go about the streets singing the Name of the Lord those passing by might criticize you, "Oh! Look at this fellow going about shouting Govinda! Govinda!" and they would mimic you, 'Govinda! Govinda!' Be happy when you hear them.

Their criticism and mimicking should gladden your heart. Why? When they criticize you in this manner they utter the Name of the Lord (Bhagavan Nãma)!

Sadhus are very merciful ('krupãlu'). When they move about on the streets they might come across a leprosy patient in a very bad state. They look at him with overflowing compassion and sing Govinda! Govinda! Their hearts melt looking at the state he is in. Looking at him they would feel truly sorry for him, 'oh! This jiva is suffering.'

And what happens? This leprosy patient attains Vaikuntam after his life here ends. He himself would not have any idea of who has bestowed this state on him.

Why did he say that one should dance about on the streets (singing the glory of the Lord)?

On auspicious days like Ekadasi people go on the streets singing the Divine Name of the Lord. This is called 'Nagara Sankirtan'. The Divine Name is spread in this manner especially in the Tamizh month of 'MArgazhi' [mid-December to mid-January]

Just like You protect me always, I earnestly pray to you to protect your children also, who are working diligently to spread your Divine Name

"O Lord! To those who tire themselves to obtain 'Bodha' regardless of Bhakti, remains, just as those who pound the outer husk."

In these and other simple beautiful sayings which are the outcome of ecstasy of Bhakti, it is shown that Bhakti alone is capable of leading to Moksha without any hindrance and the path of Jñāna dissasociated with bhakti is difficult to be trodden being beset with many pitfalls and dangers.

There is not the slightest doubt that, if we pursue properly by all means, the path of Bhakti is not difficult. It is capable of yeilding unlimited benefits and we will become the recipients of greatest happiness.

Only the Vedas are the testimony ('pramaana') for the existence of God. The Vedas are the 'Eternal law' that show the right path to a man who desires to reach God. Therefore, only by following the path shown by the Vedas can one have darshan of God. Naamasankirtan is also a way advocated by the Vedas. Hence, we follow this path.

During the conversation they talk of Hanuman, the great bhakta. There is a picture of Hanuman on the wall of Thakur's room. Thakur says: See, the state of mind of Hanuman! He wants none of these: Wealth, honour, bodily comforts. He only longs for Bhagavan. When he was running away with Brahmastra (a heavenly weapon of the Brahma) taken from the crystalline pillar, Mandodari started showing him many kinds of fruits. She thought that tempted by fruits he might climb down and drop the weapon, but Hanuman could not be tricked. He said

Sri Rama, the Kalpataru (wish fulfilling tree)

Do I stand in need of fruits?

I have got the fruit that has made my life fruitful,

The tree of the fruit of liberation Rama is planted in my heart.

I sit under the Kalpataru (wish fulfilling tree) of Sri Rama

Whenever I desire any fruit I get it.

But you speak of the fruit; O woman, I am not bargaining for.

I go leaving the bitter fruit to you.

Thakur sings this very song. And again he goes into the same samadhi. Again his body is motionless, eyes fixed, and he sits still. He is seated the way as if a picture in the photograph. Only just now the bhaktas were laughing and making merry, now they are all gazing at this unique state of Thakur. It is for the second time that M. sees the state of samadhi. After some time a change comes in this state his body is relaxed and a smile plays on his face. The senses begin to function again in a normal way. Shedding tears of joy from the corners of his eyes, he utters the name, "Rama! Rama!"
